I have a grand to spend on upgrades this year, I am leaning towards intake and exhaust. My ride is stock except glow plugs, wheels, tires and PMD of course. My old exhaust is rusted pretty bad, no leaks just yet, but I could use cooler operating temps, and more beef in the power department. ANy thoughts on this? My exhaust system is shot and a few hangers need to be welded. So this makes me wonder if I should just get one done from a muffler shop. Or buy my system and have them install it...

the intake and exhaust are the first things you should look at. These engines are choked from the factory.
www.ssdieselsupply.com has lots of stuff to make it run better check it out.
If you have any mechanical ability you should be able to install the intake and exhaust yourself, It comes with all brackets and hangars and will do wonders for your performance...Garth

I was looking at the exhaust and I know I will need the cat converter for it too. I am ordering the intake in a few weeks. I have been looking into several exhaust packages as well. I have done extensive motor repairs such as motor swaps and rebuilds so I should be able to handle the exhaust. How long of an install? I guess about 2 hours removing the old and fitting the new.

It took me about 2.5 hours to do my exaust, it is easy but takes time, also i would recemend a 4" exaust it lets your moter breath better and sounds great!

Thanks for everyones feedback, I appreciate your time. I am going with a SSD exhaust and intake, along with some exterior improvements. My side steps are hanging by a thread....I will more than likely pay some muffler shop to put up the exhaust, I dont like cold concrete in the winter. I am still considering buying the perfomance package...but I dont really like a bunch of gauges, I know they are important but I dont tow anything heavy anymore, my fifth wheel is now a pop up. I just want to keep the rig rolling for another 10 years. My main concern is getting the maintenance out of the way, and lowering engine temps...arent we all. Thanks goodness for Walt, I ask questions about diesel parts out here and since it isnt a Duramax, cummins or powerstroke...they dont carry parts in stock. The CDR valve for example...the dealer couldnt even find the part in their database.
