Does anyone know where i can get an aftermarket tach. Also how do i go about turning up the injection pump? And is it easy to tune it back down again?

I have posted the proceedure for turning up the pump but don't remember where it can be found, so here it is again. Remove the intake extension, the return hose on top of the pump, then remove top of pump, 4 screws. With an allen key, unscrew the throttle rod from the back of the pump and draw it out. Now open the thottle and remove the mechanism inside the pump. In the bottom of the pump 2/3 rds of the way back is a 1/4 inch hole, watch in there as someone turns the engine with a spanner on the bolt for the front crank pulley, until you see a small allen screw appear in the hole. Turn this screw in, 1/6 th or 1/3 rd of a turn, depending how much fuel you want. Unscrewing reduces fuel. My pump was warn so it has about 3/4 turn.

Looks like a used Instrument cluster with tach is about $100. Thats what I would do and turn the pump up till it blows coal.

........and turn the pump up till it blows coal.

You just got to be careful doing that.... The EGT's can get kinda hot blowing that coal! :D

What are EGT's???:)
I ran my 93 with the pump turned up 1/4 and the wastegate wired shut with no gauges!!! At wide open the exhaust never cleared up completely!!! Pickup is still running hard to this day. The reason I feel its still running, We never let the coolant temps get past 215ish, but that thing never seemed to built heat in the coolant like my 95 does. If I had another I would install gauges and turn it up more but have the same mods I have on my 95.

Hey Walt will send you detailed illistrated instructions on procedure. I turned up my old pump, it was off truck cause i was replacing it, WITHOUT taking anything out. Instructios said DO NOT REMOVE!!!! fuel rod. Have to grab directions and read to tell exactly why. INSTEAD use a ball head allen wrench, as i did, no trouble at all to get. very close clearance but it is easily managable. Screw is very stiff to turn tho. Will get the directions and repost with specific allen head size and reason why NOT to remove fuel rod.

i've had the fuel rod out many times to polish it to remove corrosion from the damp diesel. Never had a problem, also moved the mechanism to a new position, but that changes the max revs and idle revs which have to be adjusted externally. That's probably why it now revs like hell before the govenor cuts in.

According to the instuctions walt sent me.

Engine MUST be COLD before starting this procedure

Utmost cleanliness should be exercised. Do NOT use any rags durring the adjustment procedure. Lint from the rag can clog an injector. Lay all parts on clean newspaper durring adjustment procedure.

Late model (89 and newer) 6.2L and all 6.5L TD engines may have a plastic cap over the head of the guide stud. the position of the guide stud is pre set at the factory and should NOT be altered.

1. Make sure both batt ground cables are disconnected. Disconect Wiring from top of fuel injection pump cover. note their location for reassembly.
2. Place drip pan under rear of engine block to catch fuel. Clean upper pryion of pump with diesel fuel or parts cleaner solvent. Do NOT clean pump while engine is hot as pump damage may occur.
3. Remove fuel return line from top of pump cover. Remove the top attaching bolt and and loosen the lower attaching bolt on the fast idle solenoid and place solenoid aside. Remove pump cover bolts and and remove cover. NOTE Utmost care care must be used to prevent damage.
4 a. using a syringe or similar means, remove as much diesel fuel as possible from injector pump housing. This will make it easier to view the allen head adjustment screw through the slot in bottom of pump housing when it is rotated into position.
5 a. Rotate engine slowly by hand in CLOCKWISE DIRECTION ONLY!! using a breaker bar short extension and a 15/16" socket on the vibration damper bolt to bring the allen screw into view in the slot in the bottom of the injection pump bowl. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ROTATE ENGINE WITH STARTER!! THE allen head screw may be hard to see, a flashlight may help. The allen screw will have to be adjusted at an angle from under the guidestud/spring assembly.
6 a. Using a 5/32" ball ended style Allen wrench, rotate the screw 1/4 turn CLOCKWISE to increase fuel. NOTE Allen screw turns fairly tightly, and is self locking.
7. go to step 8 and continue reassembly. ( really that is what the directions say HONESTLY.)
8. Inspect pump cover and make sure seal is seated in the cover. Replace if questionable. Fill pump bowl with CLEAN diesel fuel. Hold throttle in the idle position. With the bolts removed from cover, position cover about 1/4" forward, twords shaft end, and about 1/8" above pump. Guide the cover downward and rearward into position, being careful not to damage the seal. reinstall bolts with flat washers aginst pump cover.
9.Reconnect batt cables. Turn ignition switch to ON position, touch pink solenoid wire to solenoid terminal. If "clicking" sound is heard, procede to step 10. IF NOT DO NOT START engine. Linkage may be jammed in wide open throttle position. Remove pump cover. Ground solenoid lead (opposite hot terminal on cover) and connect pink wire to cover terminal. With ignition on the solenoid in the cover should move the linkage, if not free the linkage or replce the solenoid. Reinstall cover.
10. reinstall fuel return line and fast idle solenoid.
11 Purge air from system.

long winded but thats how it reads from the instructions walt sent me. If you want the pics you'll have to have walt or someone send them to you. I have no way to scan or upload them to computer. Why you think i typed all this out? it wasn't for my health. LOL. Good luck
