Wanted to thank Walt SSdiesel for putting this all together. Should be a great resource.

Just finished installing a rebuilt drop-in complete 6.5 TD in my 2000 Hummer H1. The original engine had a cracked #8 cylinder as told by the mechanic at the dealer who then told me it would be $12,000 to repair. Ouch. I decided against that repair and figured I could get a reman complete engine for far less and do the work myself. Ended up getting an engine from International Diesel LTD. Everything went great until I fired the beast up. Ran funny for a while and would idle at 1000 and lope under load at idle. Thought it was a timing issue so I went to the dealer for a Tech 2 scan an $100 bill and they "set" the timing but that didn't improve the poor running of the engine. They thought my computer was bad or PMD, or IP but weren't sure because no codes. Replaced all modules, solenoids, PMD, had PCM re-flashed by Predator motorsports (where I got the computer). Put everthing back together and same problem. Erratic idling, stalling, revving without throtttle. So frustrating!! Turns out my Optical sensor is bad. This from a very knowledgeable source. Now I need find out if the IP is under warranty (I think it is for 6 months) and decide to replace it myself or pay to have it done. Any ideas what to do? I feel like the engine rebuilder should help with the install cost of the new IP since I paid for a complete engine and it was bad.

Hey Shooter,

I put some high output injectors in my hummer and had a couple of bad o-rings that made my baby run irratic. i sprayed WD40 around each injector one at a time in order to locate the bad ones. It runs like a champ now. As far as your engine goes I would certainly raise some hell if I paid for a complete engine that had flaws. I recommened you write a letter saying you are going to be seeking legal assistance in order to rectify the situation. It is amazing how fast you will get assistance.

Good luck

If your sure it's the optical sensor why not just change that?
