Hi Guys, Hope your all enjoying the start of cold cranking season. My question is to those out there that use the Glow Plug Over-ride switch. I just ordered one from Walt. Rather than smoke my glow plugs or wiring harness or relay, I'm wondering what is a safe length of time to hold down the over ride switch? And, maybe more importantly, When should the over ride be used during the ignition cycle? During glow cycle only? After Glow cycle, before engine start? Never after engine start?
I have all new instant heat plugs, new relay.
Inputs please. Thanks Mark

Hello Mark,
The glow plugs that you got from walt are self limiting, so, you are "safe" from overheating them. That said, after the glow plug light cycles on and off, before you start the truck is the correct time for the override switch. If you are having a hard time with starting, try holding it down for a few seconds and see if that helps. a few tries, and you will get a feel for how long your particular setup needs......

I'm running 60G plugs. I switch to override for about 8-10 seconds after the wait light goes off. As soon as the engine fires I turn the glows off.
I don't think it is good to burn the plugs after the engine fires because alternator voltage is pretty high for the plugs.
