What is the best way to get to the FSD to relocate it. I ordered Walts heat sync but got to looking at where everthing was and decided to see what the easiest way to get to it was.

Also, is it FSD or PMD?

You dont have to remove it the heat-sync comes with a new driver and good instructions it will take about 1/2 hour to change

I ordered it without the driver because I think mine may have been replaced already.

My personal preferance was to leave the old pmd there as a spare and mount the new one with Walt's kit, so now I have a spare and I won't loose it. Just a personal preference.

That's very sound advice. I wouldn't trust any PMD if it has spent anytime on the pump. I left my old one on the pump. It's too big of a gamble to try and use a pump mounted unit.

Well my truck runs fine and I dont see the point in spendin $250 extra bucks for something that works fine. Like they say, "If it aint broke, dont fix it":D I will replace it later if it seems fit.

Mine has been on the pump for well over 100,000 miles. No problems. I have a spare in the glovebox and another mounted to a homemade heat sink for when the "old one" gives me trouble.
Taking the one off the pump can be a PIA. Intake has to come off. I would think turning the pump towards the passenger side would make the bottom screws easier.

Alright, got it handled. After reveiwing what it would take to get the original one off, I decided to call my gm supplier. He sold me a brand new GM replacement for $150.70. Decided I was better off just putting a new one on for that price.

I think that is the best solution. Mount the new with cooler, driving with the stock one at the pump until it dies and than connect to the new one with cooler.

Glad too see you bought a new one, had the original one gone on the road I think it would have cost a bit more than what you paid at your local chevy dealer.

I was wondering has anyone ever thought of repairing there old PMD-FSD ?
I was talking to a friend of mine who is into electronics, and i told him my problem with the pmd.He had never seen the unit before, and as soon as he saw the back side of the unit he said AHhh FET's thats the two transistors mounted into the unit.He said the ones that are mounted into the stanadyne units are a cheap as in a low temp rated units. He has worked with FET's before at a radio station where they had continuous problems with over heating of the Fet's! Sound Familiar? He then upgraded the fet's to a higher temp rated one's and he said that it easily improved the repairs by at least 50 %.He is currently checking into getting some High Temp Fet's for me to help improve the reliabilty of the fsd unit.He also mentioned to use the heat sink compound instead of the heat sink gasket. He says the compound transfers heat much better than the gasket. In his opinion the gasket acts more as an insulator than a proper way to transfer heat!

Very interesting, keep us informed, we use heat sync compound on the resited PMDs.

I checked out the price of a new fsd at a local GM desler and they wanted $738.46 for the blasted unit! What a rip off ! I will keep you informed as to what happens with the change over off the fett's on the old fsd.My freind says it should not be a problem.I think he said the new ones will be rated between 300 - 350 instead of 180 ?like the standard stanadyne unit has.Maybe we can all save ourselves some coin,so that we can do some more upgrades!

Yes the GM stealer is expensive, ssdiesel sells them for $300, but new fet's would be a better way to go.
