When ordered with the diesel, the 1/2 tons came with 8 lugs. Mine was supposed to have been a 1/2 ton, and the dealer convinced the previous owner (my boss) that it was indeed a 1/2 ton, but i am pretty convinced otherwise. Its labeled 2500 and has 8 lugs. The 1/2 tons had to have the EGR engine because of their GVWR and mine has no EGR. Thats the only way i think you can REALLY tell 1/2 ton from 3/4 ton. Its been said that the 1/2 tons got 3.42 gears and the 3/4 tons got 3.73s, but ive some have 4.10s and no one has ever mentioned 4.10s. I think mine has 3.42s tho (from my calculations, but the tach also might be 200 rpm slow on it. It hits rev limiter at 3200 according to the tach but isnt supposed to hit the limiter until 3400.) And im quite certain its not a 1/2t. Vmacs burb is probably a 1/2 ton, but in order to be sure he could check for an EGR valve and/or an "S" VIN code.

Weird. I wonder why they didn't make my Blazer with 8-lug wheels, i'd prefer having the corporate 14-bolt than my 10-bolt 8.5" axle, my biggest fear when i'm 4-by-ing is breaking it.

Check your Vin number,6th digit is weight rating.1= 1/2ton,2=3/4 ton,
3=1ton.Mine is geared with 3.42 and positrac.When I bought it I did
not realize it was a half ton until I went to get it added to the insurance.
I though it was a 3/4ton when I bought it.I was after a truck large enough
to haul the family and building materials.

No egr and a 1/2 ton. Wierd. Burbs are heavy, they may have all gotten the HD engines.

Sure enough,no egr valve.By the chilton manual(haven't checked with my
bud at the dealer yet)it is listed as a high output (HO) built by the Pontiac
division(only list 6.2 as Detroit/Allison).He confirmed the Vin info If you are
concerned of the validity.

Yeah, the HD 6.5 with an EGR, HD 4L80E tranny and the smallest differential they could find. Funny to think my 6000lb 4x4 shares the same diff as a reg cab short box S10 pickup :P But it does have limited slip, but the clutches burned out years ago and the dealer wants $400 for a new set, might as well buy a detroit locker.

No not doubting you at all, didnt mean to come off like that. I just thought that the 1/2 tons all had EGR's. But re-thinking a little, I think the burbs are just heavy enough that their GVWR allowed for HD emissions (which has no egr). Which would make sense. I had an old 78 sub that got an HD454 even tho it was a half ton and that was just because it had a 6800# GVWR. The LD 454 had more emissions BS, vac lines, cat converter, etc. and was found in the lighter vehicles like, a std cab long bed 1/2 ton pickup. But anyways point being, it must be the GVWR that determines if it gets an EGR valve or not, and not the tonnage in which it its rated as i was told it was.

my dad has a 94 1/2 ton extended cab short box with a 6.5, 4l80e, and a 14 bolt 9.5 ring gear 6lug rear axle, it does have the egr system and 8 digit in vin is S, but it does have a 4l80e and the smaller 14 bolt, also a locking diff. with 3.73
