Ive noticed on every diesel ive ever owned the oil has been black as night. Even after you change it. Still black. Is that normal?

YES , this is normal as ALL diesels create soot that will blacken new oil as soon as it is started.

Well, not exactly. All diesel produce soot and you can never get ALL of the old oil out...... When I changed the motor in my Mercedes from one car to the other, I took the oportunity to replace some gaskets including the oil pan gasket, oil filter bracket gasket, and where the cooler lines attached... Hence, all the non-usual parts got drained out reeeeaaally good... My oil took almost 300 miles after that to get back to full blackness! :D

Unless your run a really hi quality bypass filter or centrifuge, you'll never have anything even close to clean-looking oil in a diesel vehicle from pre-2000......

Oops I goofed up. I meant every diesel ive ever worked on. Ive never owned a diesel before this one.

Would it be worth it to change the oil, then run it for a few minutes to flush the old oil out of the oil cooler and lines, and then change it again? Or drain the cooler and lines then change the oil? Dont really hear of anyone else doing this and it seems to work fine, but....it couldnt hurt anything. Also what is the best filter to use? The mobil 1 filters seem to be expensive and usually you get what you pay for, but i have been using WIX for everything. And in the diesel i use Rotella 15-40, and in the gassers i use Castrol GTX 10-30 unless it uses so much oil that it changes itself before 3000 miles is up then i just use a cheap filter and walmart supertech oil. Would royal purple have any benefit to the diesel or is the rotella better? It only holds 6.5 quarts so its not like id need 4 gallons of it. (thatd be a $120 oil change :D) I may be better of just leaving well enough alone. Any suggestions?

I run Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15w40 in the truck with Genuine AC filters.. Wix is great too.......

I run Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck Synthetic 5w40 with Mann or Hengst filters in the Mercedes..........

Change the oil and use the Fram HP-4 oil filter. The oil won't get black only a little gray. So did mine. since i uses these filters my engine never gets balck again. No bypass filter installed, but EGR "killed" !

do you mean PH-4 or is the HP-4 something else? I havnt seen the HP line from fram yet. Just the orange double guard, the black, and the grey. One of those is a tough guard and the other im not sure what it is i cant remember.

change intervals(no I'm not).The reason I bought this one was the mesh backed filter media and extra fine filtering (20 micron I think It said on the box).I run 15W40 Bulldog cj-4 rated oil.

20 Micron is not that fine. 10 micron is fairly common in oil filters, anything finer in a full-flow filter would significantly hinder oil flow and pressure. Now, HERE'S THE RUB WITH DIESELS:

Diesel soot in our oil is in the 2 - 7 micron size range! It goes right through a Fram or Purolator or Wix or any other brand filter because none go finer than 10 micron, so only the large mega-chunks get filtered. The soot is abrasive to boot!

So, what to do, you ask, to save my engine? Does the idea of 40K+ mile change intervals plus "like out of the jug" appearing clean oil at the same 40K appeal to you?

The answer is ultra-fine by-pass filtering. Go to www.fs2500.com to see what I'm talking about. I've discussed this before, like back last spring, I think. What is the difference between a full flow and a by pass filter. All my farm diesels have both except for one 4 cylinder Isuzu in which the oil stays clear. All the other by pass filtered diesels get black except my one tractor with an 855 Cummins. Why do some diesels soot up their oil so much more than others?

I meant the HP-4 that Garth J had erased. I think because i posted that a competitor sells them cheaper than SS Diesel. Sorry, but that is the truth - Can't live with the truth ? If anyone is interested to know the competitor, send a PM or email

i have a toilet paper bypass on my Mercedes.. So far so good.. Oil is black, but the soot levels are staying down according to the oil analysis I had done........

The Amsoil bypass comes in at around $300 and if you are a PC $230. This is a dual remote kit.

Note must run a 100% synthetic oil with it or risk engine damage:eek:
