Well my truck has been working beautiful until yesterday I went to start it and the interior light had been on all night so it cranked a little slow and it would just give a little kick but would not start. I put the batteries on charge now it cranks ok but today it does not even kick. I am getting fuel up to the filter and the front bleeder, the lift pump is working as are the glow plugs. I do not seem to be getting any fuel from the injecter pump on. I had a spare fuel shut off solinoid and changed it with no diference. The PMD is new but I tried my spare to be safe and it made no difference. Do you think the injector pump has failed. The last time I drove it I came home and shut the truck off but the radio was on, I turned the key back on to shut the radio off and the truck caught and began running again( I guess the motor had not quite quit turning and it fired up again) then I shut it off and the next day had this problem. Is it possible I did something to the pump or computor by turning it off and on so fast. All fuses are ok. Truck was running perfect until I did this.
Thanks for any help

I think the problem is the battery. How old are they ? If ONE fails, it will draw the other down. Interior light on over night ? If the batts are not the best, it could be possible, that one or both got a deep cycle and gone bad. Even after hooking them to a charger, they'll never go back to their old performance. If possible, try two batts, which you know as good and fully charged. If the truck starts and everything is okay, you found the problem. The only thing that could be also a problem is the alternator. perhaps the batts are good, but the alternator is bad a doesn't charge them while driving. Check the voltage output of the alternator while engine running. Should be 13,6 volts or above. Below, the alternator or the charging regulator inside is bad. Check also the serpentine belt tensioner if the belt tension is good.

Thanks
I have good bateries, just put on new starter, did the code reader thing, no codes in computer, no fuel at injecters when I open lines and crank engine, Can the injector pump just die instantly with out warning when the truck was running perfect when I shut it off???
Thanks Again

Maybe the crank position sensor went out? I dont know if it could be hurt by shutting it off and back on so quickly or not but I really think the problem is just coincidential. If it is the CPS, the way I understand it is the only way to fix that is to replace the injection pump.

Same opinion as torque454. Check the CPS. If the sensor is bad, it will shut down the IP to let no fuel out. Easy unplug it, than the engine wil start or not. Yes, the sensor is bad. No, sensor seems okay, but i would have a look at the shut-off solenoid, if it gets 12v with ignition on.

Here's a cheap long shot, disconnect the batteries for half an hour incase the ECM became confused by the shutdown start up.

Thanks all. Well I found out I must have fried my glow plugs again with the battery charger. I did not think the charger would have enough power to ruin them but it must have because the truck started after I plugged it in for 4or 5hours. It sucks because I had just put the fancy new ones in from SS Diesel in the spring along with a new controller. Is there a glow plug on the market that does not fail instantly when the vehicle is boosted. I live in Canada and GM must have know that boosting is a pretty common acurance in this climate.
Thanks
Cole
By the way Walt told me it was the glow plugs ( does he always have to be right LOL)

Wow it's hard to believe a battery charger would fry your glow plugs......
Did you hit it with a large boost?? Like a "start" mode on the charger.

It is a 40 amp charger but gives 200 amps in start mode. The truck normally has two 750 amp batteries so I dont understand how a 200 amp booster can fry the glow plugs. As I stated before people are boosting their vehiles pretty regular in a cold climate. There must be some way to avoid glow plug damage from a simple boost.
Thanks

They say battery chargers will fry glow plugs but my 96 sat for a few years and was started every few weeks and it would have to be jump started every time. The batterys were getting weak or there is a slow drain on the batteries. It never fried the glow plugs, AND i did use the 200 amp boost feature. i think the 60g plugs are overall the best. They may not get as hot as fast but they sure stand up to more crap than the rest of these plugs you get and last longer too. Mines still only its factory 225k mile/12 year old plugs.

I think your right, I had an used set of the GM ones here that I put in on the weekend and I am good to go. I just can not believe that they would put something so fragile in a truck that one boost and it is toast. We have Cat dozers that are left outside and boosted constantly and the same glow plugs are in them for 25 years. One glow plug at the dealer up here is $30, I got this whole set of 8 aftermarket ones for around $70 and they lasted till my first boost,so I can't complain about quality but I think I will stick with the GM ones from now on I had the originals in for 11 years with numerous boost before I ruined them and even when I changed them 3 were still funtioning fine. Every single one of these fancy new ones died a horrible death from the charger.
Thanks for all the help

I'm with you. Im going to test all 8 of my plugs when i get a chance. Theyre all factory 1996 60g's with 225k on them. Its been boosted many times and atleast some of them are still working. I think theyre all working tho. If i find more than 1 or 2 bad ones ill replace the whole set, or maybe even just replace them all anyways and keep the good ones for spares. Will use all genuine AC delco 60g's from the stealership. Something like $11 each if i remember right.
