I am a rookie and likely off the mark here but.......... on the three 6.5's I've had the PMD has been the single biggest culprit. Everything from hard/no starts, to running crappy.
Swap out the PMD and see if it helps. Good, tested, used ones are out there for less than $80. If it doesn't help then plug the old one back in and toss the newer one in the glove box. You'll need it eventually, almost for certain.

The first thing I would check is the lift pump pressure. Put a pressure guage on the water drain at the "T" valve on the thermostat housing. You should have 3 to 5 psi at all RPM. Any thing less you could have a problem with the lift pump , oil pressure switch , pump relay or wiring. Also even though the fuel filter is don't rule out that it might be plugged. Who knows what's in that " old school fuel" Good luck!!!

Old school diesel? how old and what do you mean old school? Deffinatly sounds likea fuel delivery problem, to the ip. Deffinatly check supply pump for pressure. And whos to say that old fuel hasnt clogged your filter? If you have good supply pump pressure, I'd change the filter next.

Definitely try another filter if the fuel pressure checks out. Also, when I was putting my new PMD on my truck I had to bend a couple rubber fuel lines out of the way. They immediately started leaking due to weather cracking. They were fine until I disturbed them. So you may be sucking air somewhere after changing the filter. Also, make sure the old gasket came off w/ the filter. I have had them stick to the bowl and then wad up under the new gasket.

Heating oil is not diesel, my hand book for the VW diesel I had years ago said "do not use heating oil". Although I met someone who used it in his VW without problems.

Laying on the valve cover:eek:  !? You will be changing it out to your spare, and that one will then go out, too. When I bought my truck, the PMD was laying on the valve cover from the previous owner. Lasted less than 2 months there, damn lucky it didn't fry out on the run up from Houston where I bought the truck. Get it heatsinked ASAP, even if it is something homemade. Check threads on the subject. If you can get access to a fried out AC frequency controller for a 1 HP or larger 3 phase motor, or an AC/DC inverter for the same purpose, their heatsinks are more than adequate for dissipating the heat of the PMD, I'm using half of one from a 5 HP motor controller, and it's half again as big as the FSD Heatsync.

Heating oil is just high sulphur diesel. Its actaully better for your truck. I ran it for 2 yrs and still run it when i get my house filled up. The guy that brings it runs his truck off it for 13yrs.
