If you don't all ready, put a 4" exhaust on and let it breathe.

LOL on the tow. But I agree an exhaust and/or intake or better yet both. Thats where my tax dollars are going. I would get the power package....but I need more meat on my tires to make it through winter. Fuel filter maintenance is a plus for mileage as well.

Ive already got the intake, the 4" exhaust is next on the list. What do you guys think about removing the muffler? I just changed the fuel filter about 4,000 miles ago.

If you buy Walt's exhaust system as I did you won't have to go without the muffler because it is very free flowing and sounds good too. Made a big difference on my truck.

you will get crappy mileage during the winter time anywayz. Best time to check accurate mileage is during the summer on the interstate. Some upgrades for better fuel would be straight exhaust, taller skinny tires, gears-expensive, or injectors.

My worst cause of crappy fuel mileage is this lead thing I call a right foot:D I get about 14mpg around town and 16mpg highway, 11 if towing.

Keep a close eye on your tire pressures too a low tire will create a lot of drag

i run straight 4" exaust with no muffler or cat and never had a problem, i have had complements on how it sounds by many people:)

howdy, after all of the usual suspects are accounted for:tire pressure, bigger exhaust, after market air filters, whatever you tune up, easing up on your right foot and injector adjustment there are only two things left. I'm talking about the combustibility of your fuel and the quality of your oil. I'm not a wrench but in my business i have learned that if your diesel smokes and you have a good air filter and proper injector setting then all that is left is un-combusted fuel. Seems like a crime to me, the refineries could make your fuel completely combustible but since they are not made to they don't. A quality fuel treatment will take care of the smoke and by doing so, improve your fuel use. Now you are not wasting money on the un-used fuel but also not having any gum up your injector tips or blow by your rings. Another evil result of un-combusted fuel is that some of it finds a home on your piston top creating a good case of pre-ignition. I consider complete combustion as the final tune-up because if your injectors send the cylinder the proscribed amount of fuel on time and it doesn't all combust it is as if the right amount of fuel was not delivered. As to oil, it's simple, better friction control= more horses where the rubber meets the road. parasitic drag is using the energy for it's own mindless fun at the expense of your fuel purchase. Do not bargain shop your lubricants.

Is the 13 around town, or highway? I wanna say I get around 20 on the highway as long as I do not go over 65mph. If I go 70mph or higher it goes down pretty substantially. I get about 10 when I tow my 28 ft camper, again staying at 65mph. I get around 15 around town(Not towing).

I'll go along with the speed droping MPG drasticly, and the other problem you have up there is that the diesel does not burn well, my old truck runs fine here, but runs like a chaff cutter on your new diesel.

........as long as I do not go over 65mph. If I go 70mph or higher it goes down pretty substantially.........

Now see, my Grandma's truck that I drive is the opposite. Best fuel economy starts to show up around 75-85 mph...... My dad's Gas Chevy (C1500 with a 305) gets its best mileage around 90......

Its all in the rear end gears...... Got a friend with 4.10's in a K2500 6.5TD and he gets best mileage at 53........

I understand that the Duallys all have 4:10 rears. I have not verified mine by looking at the codes in the glove box.

I run a custom 4 inch no cat or muffler that comes out right in front of passerger tire and i get about the same with no other mods. I used to get close to 17 but i put bigger tires on and that brought me down. also i got a on off fuel leak i need to take care of so i suggest the exaust. it runs much better also after doing that, i can finally hear my turbo now

If you have bigger tires and haven't adjusted your speedo, your actual mileage will be skewed.

Either LT245/75-16E or LT265/75-16 were stock tires depending on application. The load range E tires were found on some 3/4T, and all 3/4T HD and 1T applications, while the 265/75 profile was on the 1/2T and 3/4T standard.
