I installed my exhaust temp gauge today, I drove truck down the road and put it on the floor for about 5 seconds and exhaust temp got to a little over 900 degrees. Is this normal? I think Walt told me 1100 is max! I wasnt even pulling anything! Help please!

Is your EGT probe pre- or post-turbo?

Do you have marine injectors?
What have you done as far as exhaust modifications?
Do you have a chip in your truck?
What year is it?

It would help if you filled out your signature so we knew what you were driving, so we didn't ask all these questions. It's sort of pointless to speculate on why you're heating up until we know what you got.

It is a 95 c3500, 4" exhaust, Marine injectors, intake system, heat sync, I do not have a chip but do have one on order.

#9 resister also, but I noticed on the FAQ section of SSDiesels site that it will not be recognized until the truck has been started something like 50 times! ? And I just put it in a few cranks ago.

Also probe is pre turbo!

Did you change the downpipe (from the turbo to the exhaust flange) when you put on the 4" exhaust?

pre Turbo is 1250°F max.

post turbo is 1050°F max.

Down pipe was changed also! complete exhaust kit from turbo to rear!

You have done the right stuff with exhaust and intake, so you have the potential for keeping temps down...

However, you do have marine injectors, which will flow a little more fuel, so you also have the potential for bringing temps up.

Do you see any black smoke when you're pushing on it? Have somebody follow you and check.

As you likely know, high EGTs are related to incomplete fuel combustion.. putting more fuel in and not enough airflow to support that much fuel. Most of us simply turn up the airflow by installing a turbomaster and turning the boost up a bit, or installing a boost fooler in the circuit. Makes a huge difference.

As Sven said, at 900*F you aren't near the max temps (yet) but you probably will get there when loaded and pulling hard... I'd look at ways to increase your boost a bit. Mine runs a steady 12# with no EGT problems.

Hopefully my chip will come in next week. Maybe that will give more boost. I looked in rear view and didnt see any black smoke. But like you say, I need someone behind me that can get a better look.

I have not recvd chip yet but I pulled for the first time this weekend after the upgrades I have added to this point.

What I noticed is before mods when I hit a hill the speed would fall off very quick and when the truck hit 55mph it would hit passing gear and stay there until topping hill, the water temp would get around 230 in a hard pull. After mods when hitting a hill the truck never fell below 60 and the water temp never got above 210!! My boost stayed at 8 psi under a load and 3-4 at steady pull. The egt got to around 1300 at one point and would easily get to 1200 when mashing the pedal. I know thats high and I need advise how to get it down.

I dont think 8psi is enough. Thats probably your high EGT problem.

I also noticed this morning that my EGT gauge was not on zero, it was around 100 to 200 . The truck has been setting two days. Is this normal and does it mean the entire gauge sweep is off?

Sounds like you are getting pretty good performance despite what your gauges are telling you. Pulling a trailer uphill in passing gear with revs over 2500 is a max boost condition on my truck. I get a little smoke and boost of 13 or 14 psi. under these conditions.

How much were you pulling? length of hill? Any black smoke from exhaust? I had high egt problem, and only had like 8 or fraction more boost at WOT. I incresed my boost and my EGTs dropped like a rock. 12-14 psi, didnt add any more fuel mines a mechanical pump, saw a 200* plus drop in EGTs. I'd suggest adding a mechanical wastegate controller, and whatever needed to to make computer think its making the correct boost.

I was towing a 32 foot enclosed race trailer with 2000 # car. Hill was about a mile long, I dont know what the grade was.
