Block heater stopped working on my 98 Tahoe. I can't find a fuse in either of the fuse boxes (dash, engine compartment) indicating its for the block heater. Does anybody know where this fuse is located? Perhaps one of the AUX locations? Need desperately to find - it's cold here in Buffalo. Thanks!

As far as I know there is no fuse. The heater connects directly to the 110 volt AC plug that you plug into an outside 110v power source.

Time for a new heater. As long as you're going through the work of replacing it, put in a second one on the other side. To use either as a spare for situations like this or for more heat when it really gets cold.

Yep, NO FUSE for the blockheater ! Directly wired to 110V. In front of this it is really important, that the cord is grounded.

Check the plug you could have blown the house fuse

Thank you all. Time for the new block heater (Garage fuse box was first thing I checked).
Re: Ground - Since this block heater was installed at factory, I'm assuming it was grounded. What do I look for/do to confirm new heater is grounded?

Unplug the cord from the heater and check it first with an ohm meter it very well could just be the cord
If you get a new heater all you do is take the old one out and install the new one and route the power cord away from hot things..

I put a new one in my truck last summer. Unlike EVERY OTHER diesel I have owned, this one doesn't sizzle when I plug it in! First thought: Great, I get to drain the coolant again, blah blah blah. But, I checked it at the wall plug w/ a Kill-a-Watt (little gadget I found on line) and it shows to be pulling 550 watts (its rated at 600W). So, yes.... definitely check the cord w/ and ohm meter and if possible check the draw w/ an amp meter.

Walt has both kinds. OEM and the tank heater style. I believe the tank heater style circulates, I bet you could ask Walt.

well im pretty sure my block heater is ok went to plug it in today to try and find the problem and got shocked (hurt like heck) so i checked out the plug on the truck and sure enough one of the wires had broken and was shorting it out. put a new one on only thing that is confusing me is that the breaker on in the house never blew what is the best way to test if it has gone bad i left it pluged in for a while and couldnt really feel if the block felt warm. any other ways to check if its working?

Its called a circulating heater most any auto parts store should be able to get one for you if they dont already stock one

Walt sells them for $60. Otherwise if you want to spend the big bucks you can get a Webasto heater. It runs on diesel fuel from your tank, but costs about $1200. Search this site: http://www.webastoshowroom.com/BlueHeat/blueheat_products_ttc_specs.htm
