View Full Version : Yet another "WONT CRANCK"-issue

Hi guys,

A little while after I got my truck, I had problems starting. Checked everything, replaced starter, injectors, glow plugs and ignition switch key wiring harness. Problem gone.
Now - some 9-10 months later - I have the very same problem. Truck wont cranck. All seems good, and no codes.
When hot wiring the starter, it fires up instantly. Since it's a fairly new starter, I don't think that starter relay has gone bad. Haven't checked it yet though, although it seems quite obvious.
Is there another relay before the starter relay itself ?

Apart from this, the truck runs as good as ever. Btw, my batteries aren't the best anymore, so I just ordered 2 new Exxide's. Shouldn't be an issue though, because, as mentioned, I can still hot wire the starter, but when I turn the key, GPs run their cycle and everything seems ok, but nothing happens.

Any suggestions? All help is appreciated !

I think, there are some possebilities.

1. Could be the autotranny shifter indicator switch
Shows (P) or (n) but perhaps the switch doesn't set it right to the ECM, so the ECm think that the tranny is in gear and won't fire up.

2. There is another fuse/relaybox under the hood driverside. Did you check all fuses ? There some for ignition, ECM and so on.

3. Fuse center driverside of the dash -
"fuse #8 - crank" - fuelpump/derm/ecm.
"fuse #20 - trans" - PRNDL/Speedo/check gages
Did you check it ?

4. Perhaps the starter relay again - weird, but possible !

5. You wrote that you replaced the key wiring harness, but what about the ignition switch itself ?

Hope this helps !

I'll be thinking about, if i'll get another idea, i'll let U know.

Sven

Hi Sven,

starting from the back:

5) Didn't replace the ignition block itself. If this is where the problem is, I shouldn't be able to get the GP's going, I am wondering... Also when I hold the key in the crancking position, i.e. automatic running lights relay shuts off as usual.

4) hmmm... could be... I actually don't if I bypass the relay when hot wiring or not.

3) - 1) If any fuses or sensors are out, howcome I can start the engine by hot wiring the starter..?

Will check fuses tonight again. Appreciate your info ! :D

Because if a diesel engine runs, it will only shut down, if you cut the fuel flow.
So i would say, why should i not run, when you BYPASS all fuses/sensors/relays ? If it got fuel, when you direct wires the starter, it will run.

BTW : You got mail !

I would check the ignition switch.all other functions could still work, but
the starter circuit contact could be open in switch.
The transmision range sensor could cause no starter engagement if the
sensor gets out of adjustment.try moving the shift lever while holding in
crank mode,if it cranks when the switch is moved,it needs to be adjusted
or replaced.

Just went to the local mechanic today, having him take a look at it. After fiddling with the connectors to the tranny position sensor, it could fire up !
But now it can start with shifter in any position !!!!
So I gather, that the auto tranny position sensor is out, so it seems you were right in your first guess, Sven.

Now the problem for me is to actually find a replacement. Thought Walt had it, but couldn't find it anywhere :(

Tried i.e. Summit, RockAuto, LMCtruck but no luck. :( Sven gave me a lot of links, but I didn't seem to find anyone, that would sell this position sensor.
Sven, maybe you know of a dealer in Germany that actually sells this sensor?

I will check it out tomorrow and come back to you, but first i had to know, which sensor exactly do you meant.

The Park/Neutral Switch at the steering colomn or a sensor at the tranny ?

-> 1994 on steering colomn
1995 -> at the tranny ---> this should be the one you meant

50 $ at Summit # SMP-NS85 - stock
77,27 Euro at us-parts-online.de - not in stock

US-Speed-Shop -> sent mail with part question

Will ask tomorrow a buddy, which own a tranny shop for US-Cars and Trucks (about 15kilometers from me) - if in stock and how much

Send me an email with your VIN, to make sure, that you'll get the right part.

Hmm.... Then it might be the P/N sensor, because he only fiddled with connectors at the steering column. If the other sensor is on the tranny itself, it may not be the one failing.

I will get back to you, after checking with the mechanic again to verify which sensor is failing.

Also, I will send you info on email. Once again, can't thank you enough !! :-)

Has to be the park/neutral switch, that is what disables the starter.

Hi Allan !

US Speed Shop - in stock - 59,50 Euro + shipping

Cars & Stripes - in stock - 54,50 Euro + shipping (15 miles away from me)

But first you should check the ignition wiring harness, due to you said, you have already replaced it one time and check also the shifter on the steering column, the complete harness on the steering column and last, but not least the neutral safety switch at the tranny.

If you want to have such an neutral safety switch, i could fetch it at Cars & Stripes (about 15 Km away from me) and send it to or you could order it directly.
