I got a block from a junkyard for my friends Jeep, An AMC 360 from a wagoneer. We pulled it apart yesterday and when we took the valve cover off there were 2 rockers missing on one of the cylinders, one of the thread holes for the rockers was chipped but it looked like there was still some good thread there.

When we took the head off on that cylinder there were serious grooves where you can see the valves hitting the piston.

My question is what would cause valve contact like this? A very stretched timing chain?

We're going to get the blocked bored 30 over and decked. The crank is in great condition so I don't think it needs to be turned. I got an estimate of around $500 to bore and blue print the block. How much should it cost and how much does a 3-way valve job cost on a pair of heads?

I guess its probably worth finding a new head for the one that has a chipped rocker mount.

Dont waste your time, with that much wear i'd say the whole engines just about junk. You can buy a brand new 360 crate motor fom Jegs or Summit for not a whole lot more than youll spend trying to fix that pile of junk Not to mention youll save a LOT of time and frustration.

That would be true if I was building a SBC, or a ford, or a dodge. This is an AMC.

My thoughts on the valve contact.A stretched timing chain would not cause one cylinders valves to hit,and gouge.suspect broken valve springs, lost keepers,or a bent rod.I would have the crank checked for cracks and mic'ed.
A quick check for cracks in crank, stand crank on end and tap counterweights
with a hammer or wrench.should hear a nice ring tone,if you hear a dull or
sudden drop in tone, suspect a crack.I thought the AMC 360 and the
Dodge 360 were interchangable.
