My 6.5 threw a rod last month:( , if the block isn't damaged, will probably rebuild, if it is, going for a long block, any advice? while I have it out I will be changing the position of the PMD and getting a heat sink, will be buying new injectors also, anything else I should do while I have it out? OH and I am going to install guages (Pyro and boost). Any opinions or advice will be greatly appreciated!

Any thing in particular I should change while I have the engine out of the truck that I can't get to easily with it in there? What should I do with the intake? I am going to upgrade to a 3 inch exhaust.

I think the 4" sounds better, and i think the engine breaths better with the
4". My opinion though. Had a 3" before i put the 4" on my truck. But the
3" used the stock downpipe, (JUNK). Gettin rid ofthe stock downpipe im sure will make a difference. Since all the coolant will be out, take the oppurtunity and pull the radiator and clean it. wouldn't hurt to clean a/c condensor and oil coller too.

anything you ca afford to replance especially anything hard to get at including new glow plugs.I replace my motor last month and things start to "go" after a few weeks ie alternator, water pump, lift pump, oil sending unit things like that and thoroughly clean anything you plan to put back on like the turbo and waste gate.have fun

The oil pressure sensor (common failure item I'm told) which also controls the fuel booster pump is less than $50 and I found to be a nightmare to change. It would take like less than a minute to change with the engine out.

Where is that sensor at? the one I thought it was is on the drivers side toward the front, doesn't look like it would be too hard to change, engine in,
Am I looking at the wrong sensor?

BTW, I didn't know what happened for sure, I just had metal and anti freeze in my oil filter, when I got the head of yesterday, my 8 cyl. engine only had
seven pistons where they are supposed to be, the number 6 was still in the
engine, but it wasall through the engine in little bitty peices and the cyl wall
is cracked from about one inch from the top clear to the bottom, Has anyone ever had this problem? I am getting real tired of hearing from so called diesel mechanics that the 6.5 is the biggest piece of junk ever built, 9the worst is the guy that couldn't get a gas forklift to run right after a conversion back to gasoline from propane, after about a month of trying, he gave up, my buddy brought the fork lift home, we looked at it, two spark plug wires crossed, adjusted the carb, runs pretty good now!
I am glad that there is a forum like this for us guys that can get advice from someone that is in our shoes, really appreciate the good advice, thanks guys!

That sensor is in the back underneath the fuel filter. it takes a 1 1/16" to get it off and w/ the engine in the truck, I broke the plastic top part of it trying to get it loose. Even then when I was able to get a socket on it, I thought for a while I wasn't gonna get it, but now obviously I couldn't give up. There's just not much room there. Luckily, when I finally got it out it looked burnt up inside, so I didn't waste half my Saturday. Then when I put the new one in, I could only hand tighten it. I tried to find a really deep well socket but couldn't. It's working fine so hopefully I won't have any problems down the road. And as for mechanics, it's all about the experience and service manuals why any of them ever know what they're talking about, and this forum is an unbelievable source. Now all we need is a shop w/ a $20 grand lift and about $10 grand worth of tools and we're set.

Found the sensor, thanks guys, I will put a new on one before it goes in the truck, sure doesn't look like it would be any fun to change that with the engine all back in! looks like I will be going with the power package before it gets put back in also :)

I never replaced mine and it just recently went after the engine was back in not a nice place to get at , highly recommended to change.

OK, here is where I'm at so far, going with a long block, With new block and heads, reusing my IP, Intake and Exhaust Manifolds, water pump and Turbo.
Replacing glow plugs (stock or quick heat? little advice here), OPS sender, Injectors ( stock or Marine? )
Also, 4 inch exhaust, PMD cooler ( mounting behind grill, making my own extension harness, I am a cheap bastard;) ) gauges, and ECM upgrade, and also air induction kit ( Walt's power package)
I have yet to purchase anything, can you guys sound off on the for me, any and all advice is greatly appreciated! I might not agree with every body on everything, but it sure will be nice to have some input from someone with a 6.5!
Now when the people with 6 little ones call in the middle of the night cause
their furnace isn't working and it's below Zero, I can be there in a flash:D

personally i would not waste the money on bigger injectors ive been told by multiple injection and diesel performance shops that in a 6.5 they dont make that much difference and tend to just over heat the engine...My buddies didnt even give him much over 15 horse(not sure on the size of injector) but then he blew a hole in a piston on a cold start..... just keep that in mind...go with at least a 3in...cross over pipe to the turbo and 4in straight pipe back.....thats what id do mine is still stock cross over and 3inpipe but buddies sounded better and ran better with the 3in...and 4in straight

Thanks for your input C Power, I am already leaning that way after doing some more research on the matter, I'm guessing this is a subject that has already been beat to death here. I guess I should start searching the forum
for the questions before I ask them, kinda like beatin' a dead horse!

I'm goin with the marine injectors personally, unless somone can totally convince me that they are bad news. Also, id replace your water pump if its not somewhat new already. It looks like it could be several hours worth of work to change out later on.
