One of our members mentioned he could hear his turbo ramping up and down. I replaced my wastegate solenoid and repaired a cracked vacuum line. The blade in the "donut" spins freely but I'm still not sure I hear my turbo running. I'm not sure what I'm listening for but I expect a high pitched whine, like a big rig. Can anyone describe the sound? My 95 Suburban is running great after new PMD, heat sink, wastgate and glow plug relay. Just wondering.
Thanks,
Bill

Yes, you will hear a high pitched whistle. Also remember these 6.5's don't make much boost (relatively speaking) and a stock air filter assy will muffle the sound a lot.

Hey Bill, my 2000 K3500 SRW was stock and I didn't have a clue that it had a turbocharger but after putting in Walt's power package with the 4" exhaust, induction kit and 80hp computer I hear that turbo scream just like a big ol' Mack E7. More foot = more whistle. My wife's '99 K1500 Suburban with a 40hp BD computer, stock intake, I couldn't hear it. Walt's induction kit was put on and back to the Mack E7 sound wise. It definately sounds like a big rig when you open the air up. Also I drove my truck about a month without the ecm but with the exhaust and intake running stock boost, and I could hear it. So if you want to hear it, at least put the intake kit on it. Have fun

Yeah you have to yank out that stock intake, its a silencer. I am contemplating the power packege from walt myself. Im not a fan of gauges though, its too teenager for me to care...sure engine vitals, but I maintain my rig like you wouldnt believe. The intake and exhaust of course very important, I think I will opt out of the gauges and chip for a cooling upgrade instead.

The stock air box and filter are definatly what kills the turbo whistle. I pulled my stock air box and filter off and just installed an open element cone shaped K&N filter on the end of the stock tube and it made a huge difference in sound and a noticable difference if fuel milage. You can hear my turbo spoolin from the side of the highway when I pass under heavy throttle now :D

Got my first 6.5 a few weeks ago, a '98 K2500 Sub. Found out the turbo wasn't working because the vacuum pump was kaput. The pump is now replaced and I have also purchased a standard K&N filter to replace the stock one. My questions is would be acceptable to just leave the top of the stock airbox off when I install the K&N? I would like it to breathe better, plus ya gotta love that turbo whine!

All I did was remove the stock air box, bought a stock k&n air filter for I believe it was for a 1997 6.5td. It was round and had a flange,3" hole with a hose clamp, other end sealed off, 10 or so inches long. Then I went to home depot and bought a 3" abs 90 degree elbow and there it was custom intake and thats when I first heard my turbo
