Lets get this heated topic going.I hear all these people asking;"How can I get
my truck to smoke?"I find this topic to be old.Believe me I like power.I like
seeing the tractor shooting 100 ft. plumes of smoke and the pulls.BUT,I do
like to be able to see where I am going on a busy road, without having to
peer through a smoke screen layed down by a poorly modified truck that doesn't run any faster to the next red light than me.i watched the other day and truck that was going up to cars with there windows down and billowing smoke into there cars interiors.Grow up kids, not only are you endangering
evryone including youselves, but this is causing the EPA to take notice, and
causing restrictions that could seriously hurt our beloved trucks.Look at
the fuel economy numbers on the new trucks with all this emmisions added,
not too pretty.I like power and to be able to see the guy drop off in my
rear view mirror.

As far as my mechanical knowledge reaches (not very far, I might add *gg*) - I would say the more smoke, the more loss of power and lower fuel economy.
Am I right?

Also, Vmac, I think you're absolutely right. Excessive smoke draws undesirable attention. :-((

Smoke is unburnt fuel, due to overfueling. This causes more heat, the exhaust gas gets above 1200°F pre turbo and than you can have a look a your melting pistons.

Wanna see some pics ? Okay, wasn't mine !

ya i get what is being said and i dont want my truck to smoke but i will say that (remeber im 19 and i like to be impressive :D ) a big old puff of black smoke is really cool to see but that price of what it can ruin and the cost of fuel really out way the coolness of it. my buddie has a truck with a chip in it (2000 something dodge) and it smokes alot i thought those chips where suposed to increase performance? it seems to me if it smokes like that then it cant be performing all that well correct?

Not at all. For more power in a diesel you need air (cold air intake or modified stock airbox) and more fuel. In a 6.5 the max. fuel rate, that the IP can deliever, is only a little higher than stock, so if you "tune" a 6.5, you'll reach the "border" faster, than on an other truck.
The "girlie-man" truck called Dodge of your buddie, gets MORE fuel as the engine could burn. So there will be more power, due to more fuel, but there is so much fuel, that couldn't burnt and this fuel causes the smoke AND the high EGT's and so on.

In one of my previous posts I think I did a pretty good job explaining what exactly black smoke is.
