Here's the story:
My fiance borrowed my truck to take 3 horses in a 3 horse bumper pull trailer from Portland to Eugene, OR.. about 115 miles each way! At her destination, she was heading up a hill, a rather steep windy hill... Not knowing how to slow down enough she overheated the engine and I'm sure the turbo!!! Cause as soon as she got to the top and let off the gas it started steaming everywhere, the low coolant light came on and the temp rose to about 230 she says!!! She dropped off the horses and drove the empty trailer home, after adding more coolant!! Oh yeah.. Total climbing weight would have been about 6500 truck + 2000 hay in bed + 6500+ trailer/horses... so about 15k on about a 6-7% grade for only 3 miles or so.. She said she only did about 25 up it though!!
The next day I drove the truck to work (4 miles each way) and didn't notice anything, but the next day I took off and got on the freeway for the whole 1 exit it takes, and noticed a lot of white smoke coming out of the back.. Got home popped the hood and on the passenger side was a lot of black oily greasy looking crap all over the valve cover and injectors!! Looked under the truck and watched fuel drip off the front crossmember!! Pulled the heat shroud next to the turbo off and found one of the equalizing hoses had broke in 2... Ordered a new set that'll be here Weds and put on a chunk of fuel line that worked for me to get the truck out of the driveway and onto the street...
When I pulled it off it came off in chunks.. It was hard and basically felt like charcoal!! I noticed that the front one was hard as well and while messing with it, it broke aswell!! Has this happened to anyone?? If those hoses got soo hot they fried themselves should I be worried about the turbo being fried aswell.. I don't have a pyrometer but I have installed the 3" downpipe and 4" exhaust so that should have kept it at least cooler!!! Forgot to mention!! Lines are new as of November 06 along with the marine injectors!!
