Hi guys
I'm new here and I (of course) have some frustating problems with my engine. I recently bought that truck, got stranded on the highway due to PMD failure. My truck has 136'000 km on it.
So I bought heat sink, #9 resistor, OPS, lift pump and fuel filter from SSD and installed it all toghether with a new PMD that I got with the truck.
After the 50th key start it needs to recalibrate, the truck sounds "rougher" (more noise), throttle goes a little erratic and the "engine" light comes on on the instrument panel.
It disapears again a while after disconnecting the batteries (that are new too).
I haven't got the error code(s) yet, but if somebody can help or has an idea...
Thanks
Stefan

Hi everybody
I finally decided to buy the OBDII code reader from Walt.
I got code 404 which indicates a bad EGR valve, however, I'd like to check engine vacuum first.
Where do you plug your vacuum gage to check that ?
Thanks
Best regards

P0404 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Open Position Performance
There are two possebilities. The valve is stuck open or it does not open.
I would do this. The valve is only with two bolts attached to the upper intake. Remove it and see, if it moves free (a bit WD-40 could be helpful) or if it is stuck. If it is stuck, you could try to get it loose with WD-40 or similar grease. Than, the you'll know, the vac pump is okay and the only problem was/is the stuck valve. If it moves freely, the diaphrama inside the EGR valve, the vac pmp could be bad, a leak in the hose(s) or a bad solenoid could be the culprit. Than you NEED to check with a gauge. First between vac pump and the solenoid(s), if okay, than between solenoid and the EGR valve.
Sorry, but i would get rid of this crappy EGR valve as i mentioned before. If this system works as i should, you will get soot in your intake. Have a look inside. Looks really dirty. If you plug the hose after the solenoid, the valve does not open and you won't get the soot into the intake -> No dirt inside, more fresh air/oxigen -> better combustion, more power !

I'll second that one Sven. I was horrified to see how much soot was clogging my intake when I removed the top portion to ream out the restriction and drill it for the boost gauge. I removed the egr valve and plugged it internally with a frost plug. Apparently the chip I am using is calibrated for vin code F which does not use EGR anyway.
