Ok, i need a deep socket, i know, but how big is it? 1 5/16? 1.25? 1.5?

Id much rather pick one up at sears then wait for shipping and everything.

When I had to replace my injectors on my '94 burb, my dad brought a 30mm deep socket from work to install them. The socket didn't fit because the wall of the socket was too thick. We had a cheap impact socket set from Northern Tools and Hydraulics. The metric sockets were shallow so we couldn't use the 30mm with the set but the 1 3/16" socket from the set worked great. The socket has to have a deep broach to clear the head of the injector and the socket has to have thin walls.

that makes sense, impact sockets are usually much thicker then standard sockets. 1 3/16" good i'll see if i can find that, might actually have one of those super thin ones at an auto parts store. for around $10 sure beats $50+shipping

Yeah, the only problem with that is that it takes 3-4 days to get it, i'd much rather go to sears on my way home and get it right away.

I got a craftsman 5 piece deep socket set for $35 it had the 1 3/16" socket i needed plus a few more for a little more then the price of just the 1 socket.

I managed to get two of my glow plugs out through the injector ports but i am going to need to disassemble one of the heads. one of them was still too long to maneuver it out, no matter what i do its caught in no man's land. Plus since this engine hasnt been run in a while, i will be a good idea to see whats going on inside and clean up.

Just looked at walt's site, 50lb/ft on those injectors. I think its 14lb/ft on the glow plugs, somebody correct me if im wrong.

What kind of vehicle is this engine in ? If you jack the engine up and pull the engine mount right out ,drop it down lower will that give you enough room?

Its in a 1981 CJ-8 Scrambler, there really isn't much blocking my access to the engine, the hood grill and fenders are off.

I need to remove the head because one of those glow plugs is being a pain and i cant get it out. i figure this would be a good time to peek inside and make sure all is well, the engine was probably pulled from a junk yard and sitting for a long time.

One more question about size, the injector end of the high pressure fuel lines is 3/4" the pump side is metric its bigger then a 15mm (the biggest open ended metric wrench i have" im going to sears tonight to get a full set. I suspect its a 17mm, is that correct?

Does anybody have any info on removing the heads? is this engine an overhead cam or a center cam like the standard sbc? I have a chiltons manual for this engine and haven't looked into it yet, i usually just start unbolting stuff and taking pictures and don't refer to the manual unless i have a problem. This seems like a good time to put new oversize head gaskets in for a little extra room because im putting the 6.5 turbo on this puppy.

Some are 16mm(5/8" will work) some are 17mm .19mm and 3/4" are the same.If you are giong to pull the heads. Pull the IP and lines as one unit To get to the timing gear bolts on the pump you pull the oil fill tube and go through the hole you will have to bar the engine over to get to the 3 of them.Good luck!

After being fed up with trying and failing and finding a nice large pair of offset tweezers in my toolbox i managed to get inside the injector port and pretty much had my way with the broken glow plug. I still couldn't manage to get it out, the metal electrode was too long on the back and it just was physically too big to be pulled down into the cylinder and then back up. But now that i had good access to the plug tip i decided to be more persuasive, i used a flat head screwdriver to force the plug past where it was getting stuck, and i got the sucker out. So im thinking i wont need to disassemble, Thanks for the input though. My only concern now is the glow plug dust left behind.

I had a great idea last night and I'm going to see how it works tonight, Canned air used to clean electronics comes with a long tube like WD-40. If you put the tube all the way down into the cylinder from the injector and blow it should force air out of the cylinder fast enough to blow any pieces of glowplug out of the injector port. It should be better then an air compressor because the tube is narrow and flexible and can get all the way to the other side of the cylinder.

I would crank the engine over after blowing it out before putting it back together, just in case, you should be fine.

156 inch pounds force = 13 foot pounds
