I just got done rebuilding a 94 turbo diesel. I had a blown head gasket and it turned in to a full motor rebuild minus pistons. Has anyone esle had any experence doing a rebuild? I was curious if someone has done a compression check to see how high it is after decking the block. Cause the pistons come out of the block but the head gasket is 10 thousands thicker i hope this will cover the diffrenece. The motor runs great but i worry about spining the motor to fast and it knocking the top of the heads.

The recommended deck cut is .005 which raises the CR 1 point. I rebuilt my 6.2 with a .008" deck cut and used Felpro big bore gaskets. No problems in 15 YRS. You'll probably be OK at .010" using big bore gaskets. I don't see the piston clearance as a problem because the gasket is around .030 " compressed

I was also wandering how much the ssdiesel chip will raise boost presure. after the rebuild i put in a boost and pyro gauge and i am getting amost 9psi boost peek and it is usually around 7psi. (not loaded) and the pyro is at the most even after a steep hill gets to 1050 deg.F. I run a homemade air intake and a strait 3 1/2in exhaust, with marine injectors.
Another thing i was expecting to see more smoke from more fuel through the injectors, no such effect. i had the timming checked and in is runing about 3.2deg advanced. should it be more or less, and how much.

I've had plenty of experience rebuilding 6.5 diesels. I've been a machinist in an engine rebuilding shop for twelve years and I must have rebuilt over a hundred of those things by now(I can set the blocks up in the resurfacer in my sleep). Generally when I get one of these things in at work it's a rebore, surface the deck .010" and install a new set of Mahle pistons that have been destroked .010" and use a stock thickness head gasket. As long as the valve recession is within specs(if the old heads are any good, that is, 50 to 60 percent of the time they aren't.) and the cracks through the outer main bearing cap bolt holes aren't too big(every single one I do gets ARP studs and a main girdle on those outer bolt holes) the engine usually gives many years of good service.
That being said, when the customer has requested it, I have used the .010" thicker headgaskets and resurfaced the block .010" while keeping the cylinders standard bore. Never had a problem with that as longs the piston protusion plus that extra .010" gasket thickness still adds up to somewhere within the factory spec(That is the reason, after all, for the thicker head gasket). I've also used the thicker gaskets on a non surfaced block to bring down the compression a bit on 6.2's for the guys that want to put a turbo on them.
As long as the machinist who did the work for you knew what he was doing you should be okay. :)

Cool thanks for the info. The motor seems to be running good, this was my first motor rebuild so i was a little nervius but i took time to make sure i did things right.
You mentioned using ARP main cap bolts?
when i put the lower end back together i went to reuse the main bolts and four of the started to stretch to the piont of breaking and the local parts store looked through many resources and could not find an aftermarket bolts. and no dealer on the west coast had stock ones, we had to order them from Tennesse i believe where the motors are manufactured.
Any way lets just say i had fun tracking down many parts for the rebuild.
