I have 97 gmc 1/2 ton work truck. Will a tranny work from an 88 Chevy 1/2 ton? They are both manual and two wheel drive im just not sure if it will bolt up. Advice appreciated.

what tranny is it?
i was told that all gm trannys use the same bellhousing bolt patern and i would think they would be the same

I am swapping a 1989 Ford 300 six into my old 1966 Ford F-500 so there is probably a good chance. There is an adaptor plate between the engine block and bellhousing that makes it all possible.:)

What trannys are they? Im guessin the 88 has a 4 speed tranny, and the 97 is a 5 speed. I am pretty sure they will bolt up, but overall length might be different. And i'm not sure of the number of splines on the output shafts of the two different trannys.

I am not sure what the trannys are i will probably take both out this weekend and figure it out. I just wanted to know if i was wrong in thinking there was even a possibility in them being compatible.

as long as the engins are v8's or a 4.3 ,the bell is the same all the way up to the 454 big block small block and the 4.3 use the same bell and for the most part the same mounts (except 4.3) and the rest of the v6's and 4cyl are diferent !!!

the 88 likly has an SM465 4 speed transmission while the 97 has a NV4500 5 speed. It will probably bolt up but you will lose your overdrive. Length might be an issue also so youd need a new driveshaft made. Plus your clutch linkage may or may not hook up. But as far as the transmission bolting in, yes it will bolt in fine.

all right iv got my own tranny question now
the sincros are gone for 2nd gear in my truck it has the nv4500 i have an nv3500 out of a 92 gasser that got totaled so what i want to know is will that lighter tranny hold up at all with the tourqe of the 6.5 i know the gearing is differnet but it wouldnt be a permenent swap just untill i can get the money to get the nv4500 rebuilt. the other thing im wondering about is are the two the same length they have the same t case behind them so im not worried about that bolting up and the tranny mount on the crossmember is the same style so it all looks like it should work to me any one got any imput?

I was talkin with a gm mechanic friend the other night about trannys and the hydralic clutch setup. THe 97 should or could have a slave cylinder internaly mounted in the bellhousing, directly acting on the throwout bearing. THe 88 will have an externaly mounted slave cylinder that pushes on a fork, resting on a peg, to push the throwout bearing. So you may have to make a different hydralic line to connect to the older style clutch slave cylinder.
