Wondering if anyone here knows about the regulator cams on the side of the i/p.Gathering up my spare i/p's and happened to notice that the cams that operate the bypass regulator are different profiles, and since the DB2's use fuel pressure to regulate timing adv,is there a little performance to be found there. The 4911 i/p cam( orig i/p off my L65 motor,j code non emissions) is far different than the others, most of which are 6.2 pumps.

Turns out that the cams are different profiles for different amounts of timing.I compared both turbo i/ps to the non turbo and a little reading says that the turbo cam allows for less timing than the 6.2 cams.I wondered why the old 6.5 ran so much better with the 6.2 pump(which is off a 1 ton 2wd cab and chassis,j code)

Looks like you've stumped most of the members with this thread:) Can't we just wait for someone to develop a common rail fuel injection system for our trucks?

Seriously tho, the money they want for a reman pump these days is outrageous and if I had a spare one laying around a little exploratory surgery would be tempting.

My 6.5 ran ok,but got to where it wouldnt start hot(I was told dist head going bad ?) I went thru my pile of i/ps and found one with reman stickers and popped it in there.I could not believe the difference. Most of my exp. was with 6.2's and this 6.5 came alive(which had me suspect a truck I sold last yr just needed a pump) I have scanned the net looking for details of operation on these pumps without much luck.If you look at the top of the i/p,you will see an arm running down to the bypass. That arm has a roller on it and follows the contour of the cam, operating the bypass regulator.I fine tune electronic equipment all day,its nice to work on something mechanical for a change.

That cam rests where the TPS switch is for the trans(right under the tps)

I bought a 97 1 ton swr a few yrs back.Stopped at dealership to buy serv manual.Their diesel mech asked me if it ran good.I replied yes, like a top.His reply was sell it now.It freaked me out and I did.My brother has put 150,000 miles on it since!I decided to stick with 92-3s with no electronics so to speak(just trans control) and have accumulated a lg pile of parts,i/ps ect.So its not big $$ to fool with them.I got that 6.2 pump for free on a frozen and busted 6.2 (DONT USE THE ROUND HOLE WHEN INSTALLING I/P in the drive gear!) It will make you cuss and have the neighbors looking at you funny and not let their kids play in your yard anymore.
