View Full Version : Fast, rough idle, lurching...

To make a long story short, the harmonic balancer went out on my '98 Suburban 6.5 TD a week and a half ago. It still ran excellently but had a slight vibration at idle. My buddy & I tore it down a few days ago and also replaced the water pump and timing chain/gear set at the same time as a precaution (233,000 miles). Took it to the dealer to have it timed and found out that we had the chain offset by a tooth and also that the vacuum pump was dead. DOH! Anyway, after the dealer attempted to time it, it now runs horribly even after fixing the timing issue, replacing the vacuum pump and taking it back to the dealer to have the injector pump timed again. It idles at 1400 rpm and shakes terribly. If you so much as slightly press the accelerator, the engine leaps up to 1800-1900 rpm and smooths out perfectly. Above 1900-2000 rpm it falters, but when it hits 2500 it takes off like a shot again.
When driving along at 1800 rpm, it's fine as long as you keep it at that engine speed, preferable with a slight load. If you start to go down hill at all, it lurches back to 1400 rpm.
The dealer seems clueless. At this point they're telling me it needs an injector pump but I don't believe them. Why would it "happen" to fail at the dealership when it was running perfectly before? They also said that maybe the engine "is just worn out". RIGHT.
Any suggestions as to what the problem might be? The PMD was replaced a little over 2 years ago.

Thanks!
