You have a truck with a manual in it factory? You want to put an auto in it now? If you'd fill out your signature, or let us know what you have for a rig it will let us help you pick the right tranny, as there are a couple versions that would fit. You lookin for overdrive or direct drive?

Find a 4L80E off a diesel or have yours rebuilt to diesel spec.

I am fairly sure ( rebiuld kit was up to 94 year) That the electronics in the the 98 tranny you have are different that than early 6.5s with mechanical pump. Mechanical pump had a tps on it to control tranny shifting. Not sure where you got your 6.5 donor engine, but if you got it from a donor truck 6.5 4l80e you should get the whole thing.

the electronics should be similar enough to use with the trans control unit from the mechanical injected trucks..

If you don't want to worry about the electronics, a 700R4 can be built to handle the diesel, but it won't exactly be cheap.. I have almost $1k in parts alone in the 700R4 that's in my camaro (3700lbs, runs 11's with 3.08 gears).. I saved on the labor by building it myself though..

So you need the tranny computer from the donor truck or another from a 92-93. And hope GM standardized the wiring and harnesses with the 350 gasser :)

The 4L80E like my 97 Z28's 4L60E is computer controlled, but as jetta said the 700R4 in my 86 camaro would do it, but it wasnt too strong OEM, so youll need some upgrades.

...what year is the 6.5 that you want to use and was it hooked up to an auto trans???...if it was then you already have the neccessary auto controls on that engine...tps is on pump and in engine harness and engine speed signal is part of oil pump drive...and according to the main transmission parts distributor in Austin,Tx. the only difference a 4L80E in a gasser and a diesel is the torque convertor...4L80E is ALL electronic shift controled by pcm/ecm...at least that's what they tell me...so you might already have the drivetrain you need in the truk already...

but on his 98 he would have an ECM that also has the engine monitoring and controls, and wouldnt he need one that only has the tranny? Would it work if the ECM isnt getting all the other information it wanted? So he would need a tranny only computer like from a 92-93.

as far as I know all the 4L60E's and 4L80E's have the same harness.. The harness and controller TCI sells is for both.. Also from what I have found the TCU from the mechnical diesels will work well for a custom application.. They are found in the 92-93 pickups and 92-95 1 ton vans.. I didn't think they used a mech pump up to 95 till my brother bought a 95 GMC van that has a 6.5 NON turbo with a mechanical pump and a 4L80E..
