So I went out to start my truck Saturday morning and got a nice surprise when the starter started to make a lot of noise and then went to spinning free. I will guess that the Starter bolts broke. I can’t be sure yet since there is 6” of snow on the ground and I don’t need the truck that bad at the moment. Anyway my question is do these trucks take a special bolt or can I just pick up some bolts at any part store.

Haven't heard of them brake bolts, but a piece of the block can break off if there is n bracket on the front of the starter. The bolts are metric an need to be quality steel. The drive is through a roller clutch that can fail, and the reduction gears in the starter could have stripped.

My wife found a bolt laying on the ground where my truck was parked last time I drove it. I will have to wait till I can get it in my shop next week to put an eye on it. The nice thing is it’s a stick so I can at least push start it to get it to the shop. I sure hope it isn’t a broken block. Who has the best deal on a new starter if it turns out to toast and what do I do if the block is broken.

I installed an engine for a customer that had the block welded for one of the starter bolts, and it didn't break. It was a 4 cylinder engine.

SSDiesel sells starters at a good price
IF the bolts broke chances are the bracket holding the foreward end of the starter is missing.
Like I said before if you dont use the bracket it will happen again...Garth

Does SSDiesel sell the bracket if it is missing?

Dealer had the bracket and its just a few bucks
If your lucky just the bolt broke and you can get the broken piece out with a centre punch..Take your time with it you dont want to damage the threads.
I had to use an easyout it worked ok as the bolt broke eavenly and left a flat spot to centre punch and drill.
Also check where the bolt was found if there are any shims on the ground or maybe if lucky only one bolt broke and the starter is still in place.
If the bracket is broken DONT weld it, it will only break again get a new one...Garth

Finally got the broken starter bolts out. Man that was easy just went to Grainger got a 3/16 left-hand bit center punched the bolts and before the bit could make a hole the bolts backed out. The bracket was on the starter but the bolt was loose and I will bet the mounting bolts were the same way before they broke off.
Thanks for your help guys.:)
