i have 95 suburban 373 rear. stock engine ,walts intake, glow plugs, cooling upgrade. i need more pulling power for annual vacation pulling 31 foot camper. what is the frugal way to get more power. 40hp chip, 80 hp chip, 4 in exhaust. or just new 3 in downpipe. i cannot have a loud exhaust as i start up at 5 am next to house. what is the first thing to do on a budget - besides prayin for a duramax with more power.... thanks andy.:)

The first thing I would do if I was towing is gauges! You got to know what is going on. The next thing is the 4" exhaust the 3" down pipe would be a waste pushing into a 2 3/4" exhaust sys. SS Diesel has a system with a quiet muffler. The 80hp chip does'nt help on MPG but big on power! The 40 hp helps on MPG and improves power but not like the 80hp. My 99 Burb has a 40hp BD ECM. It woke it up and picked up about 2/3 MPG I am waiting for the stock exhaust to rot off so I can put on a 4" system. and maybe get 2MPG more! My 2000 K3500 srw has Walt's power pkg. 2. with the 80hp ECM all kinds of power but the MPG did not change. I blame that on the 4.10s Good luck and have fun!

I just have the 3" downpipe installed on my rig so far (hopefully installing the rest in 3 1/2" tomorrow) and i start it up every morning infront of my place. its not loud enough to bother anyone inside, infact you can only hear it if you are standing by the front door. Ive found that when i leave is when it gets really loud, so to help with that i just barely touch the pedel till im down the road into town (and anytime i see a cop, just let off the pedel and it will quiet down to a normal diesel sound.:D

Now you just have the new downpipe and no cat right? Was not to hard to install new down pipe was it?

the down pipe can be a bit of a pain in the butt, but it is worth it the intake dp and exhaust really makes a big differnce exspecialy when you get rid of that darn cat. and sence it is a turbo unit the exhaust isnt retarded loud unless you put your foot in it. its not like a NA car or truck which would be deffing with out muffs.

I can tell you exactly how "loud" the SSD 4 inch exhaust will sound....tomorrow. I am getting it welded on in the morning. But I did spring for the high flow cat with the exhaust...gotta stay legal. So that may affect the sound, some say there is a bit of a "drone" at high speed and running straight pipe mind you, but there is always the quieter muffler option. Mo money tho. I would say exhaust if you thirst for more power, you have the intake...get the pipes to seal the deal, open up the hidden hp, and it will be a cooler, stronger pulling rig.

it was a breeze, took about 15 minutes because of the hard to get to location of the clamp. Would have been easier if i had had another pair of hands helping me. its hard to hold the new pipe up and put the clamp back on while not letting the pipe drop.

I agree about the gages you need to know what is going on.
