If i wanted to get roller rockers and new valve covers and things of that nature, should i be looking for big block parts or small block parts? Where does this engine get most of its design from? is it a big bock through and through or are some parts more small blocky and other big blocky?

Hi

Well, the engine is physically the big block size and will bolt up in any place a gm will fit as the motor mounts and bell housing bolts are all in the same location. As far as rockers? I'm not sure it would be worth the money, seeing how they (6.2 and 6.5) already have roller lifters and the actual rockers are on a cam, so to speak, which are bolted to the head which, with out some serious mods would work (I'm guessing on the serious work part). You're on your own for the covers :)

The only thing the 6.2/6.5 share with the small and big block is the bell housing bolt pattern and the engine mount location thats it!!! It was built from the ground up as it's own DIESEL engine. It had nothing at all to do with any gas engine like the Olds 350 diesel. GM did not want to make this mistake again!!

Yeah, my ex- father-in-law put 2 of those Olds 350 diesels in their family sedan in the first 48,000 mi, one as a warranty covered by GM, one on his own before dumping it. That's what happens when corporate bean-counters get involved in engineering and design! The least they could have done is use a 4-bolt main block (SBC) with forged steel main caps to keep the cranks in them.

If he wants to pretty the engine up, well you could get the buffer and some compound and polish the aluminum intake, intake plenum, and compressor side of the turbo, and get the valve covers chromed ($). Hmmmm, possible after-market eye-candy? I live here in Lincoln, NE and we have a plater, Lincoln Plating, that does primo work. How good? They are THE platers for all the chrome goodies installed on the production line by Harley Davidson. I know the owners socially, can we all picture chrome intakes and brakets, and other goodies for our 6.5's? Take that PowerJokes!

if you're not into having to polish and clean your chrome parts everytime they get a smudge on them, face it, diesels are dirty, you can get your parts powdercoated. costs lett and you can pick any color.

Yeah, gas burnners leak oil, too. Just after 250k I guess ours leak a little more still... a little bling on the thing... hood popped at the drive-in, 4" open exhaust roarin' while the turbo whines and The Doors blarin' on the entertainment system... Oh sorry, havin' an over 40 moment flashing back to high school in the seventies and my big-block 72 Monte Carlo...Hmmmm 6.5td 72 Monte Carlo... 2.73 rear, 12 sec quarters, 27 mpg....

Thanks for the info, i'm not really looking for bling or chrome, i just wanted something with an oil port on it so periodically i can make sure things are getting oiled properly under the valve cover.

Where is the oil pressure sensor located and water temperature sensor located? i still need to splice those into my AMC harness.

the ops should be located behind the driver side head on the block itself and the temp sensor is on the DS head all the way up front. should be easy to spot as the only other things up there is the injector and glow plug
