I think my transmission might be bad it acts up only when its cold. Going into reverse it has a delayed engagement (when cold), and when the throttles pressed quarter way down it acts like its pressed all the way down(when cold). Shifts smooth and accurate when war. Sound like a bad tranny? Thanks in advanced.

You could try changing the oil strainer, it could be partly blocked and not allowing good oil flow when the oil is thick.

Also, hard shifting when cold can be caused by particles in the valve body. The valves stick, it is not a big job to drop the valve body and clean it out with gasoline, just note where the steel balls have to go back, about 5 of them above the metal plate. Put them back in place with vaseline.

So after a few shops told me I need a new transmission, I took matters into my own hands and checked it out for myself. I was getting second gear starts, slipping out of overdrive, and the truck would slip into what seemed like neutral sometimes. I went into acme looking for an additive like "lucas" for my tranny and explained to them my issue. I told them I have the 4l80 and and they said, if maintained, the 4l80e is a 300k mile transmission. So i bought some dextron 3 and a bottle off lucas. When I checked my dipstick, while the truck was running, it was "dry"! I added the bottle of lucas to the transmission along with a little dextron 3 and the transmission shifts like its new. No more slipping and it goes right into gear even when the trucks cold (a problem I had before). It even seemd to run down the highway at a lower rpm. About 75mph at 2350. Just thought Id share the good news, with the money il save on not having to buy a transmission I can start buying other performance mods for my rig. :)

Glad to hear it was something cheap and simple.
