I have a chance to pick up a 4l80e pretty cheap. All I know is it is out of an 06 2500 hd 2wd. I do not know if it is a diesel or gasser. Does it matter since all i have is an ecm for the trans? Will this work?

the 4l80 you speak of is probably a 4l85 from a gas job.
I dont think this is compatable, you are better off scoring one from a junk yard that is from a diesel and is year compatable. The 2006 will certainly have different connections and is definetly out of a gasser with a different stall speed ect. all diesels from 2002 up were duramax/allison.

The trans would most likely have different connections as he said. But your main problem is that it would be from a gas engine. It would have to be rebuild with more clutches and a diesel shift kit (alters the pressure and shifting) to take the low end torque that a diesel makes. Not to mention the diesel uses a wider reverse band than the same gas trans. They did/do use the 4L85e behind the duramax in the vans, but they are seriously derated 450torque and 250hp instead of the pickups 660 torque and 365hp. I also believe the 4L85e is a little longer than the 4L80e, so you may need a drive shaft. You would have to do the same thing to a 4L80e out of a gasser.

Last winter I lost reverse and when looking for another trans I found out the one in mine was rebuilt for a gas engine. Needless to say that trans only had 45,000 miles on it, and it went out the 4th time I used it to plow.

Thanks for the info. I managed to get reverse for now by modifying the apply pin for the band. It wasn't broken and the anchor was still intact. It is just worn out. It would still apply when air checked. We put a pin gauge on it and the pin and the band are worn. I know it is strictly a temp fix but it will buy me some time to get the funds together to rebuild the tranny.

Since you have had your tranny apart, im guessing your gonna rebuild it your self when you get the funds for the parts. Check around e bay less than $600 total in my tranny parts. And got high quality parts. Im thinkin less then 300 in a HD rebuilt torque converter, Less then 200 for cluches, steels, bands, gaskets, and such, shift kit was less than 100. All prices included the shipping costs.
