I've recently aquired an engine miss :( I first noticed it when i was running on the last 5 liters (2 gallons or so) of diesel while waiting in line to fill up at 7/11. Fuel additive doesn't make a difference, i thought i had water in the system, and happens only when the eingine idles after it's been running for a few hours. The PMD has already been re-located, but, i've noticed that my lift pump is louder. I will be checking fuel pressure soon, what lbs should it be at and is the bleed valve the best place to tap into?
The engine miss is the only symptom that i have, no power loss, no hesitation.
I'm the 3rd owner of this awesome truck and i'm sure it has the original IP, injector nossles etc. It has 255k (158,000 miles) Either way...i'm sure i'll have to replace something expensive. Any help would be appreciated.

Checking the fuel pressure is about the easiest thing to do on the 6.5. Take your vacuum/pressure gauge with the cone fitting on the hose and insert it into the water drain hose end on the engine. With the engine running, open the water drain valve and read the pressure while somebody moves the throttle thru the RPM range from idle to 3500. Watch the reading thru the entire curve. Normal pressure is 3# to 5#. Sometimes pressure is a little higher than 5, is OK but anything less than 3, lift pump is weak. If there is no pressure, it will probably be the OPS (oil pressure switch) or the lift pump. If no pressure, I would definitely replace the OPS first as they are known to be short lived. After that you can do the pressure test again to determine the condition of the pump. Once in a while, the pump relay may go bad. you can test for that problem by switching another relay in the relay box to see it it solves your problem.

Hey that sounds just like the same problem I have when I'm almost out of fuel. The last 5-10 litres. I've had it stall about Half a dozen times trying to get to the gas station. but when I fill up the problem is gone until I get really low on fuel again. Shouldn't let it get so low due to the fact that who knows what is at the bottom of most peoples tanks. I think that it has to do with the pickup in the tank and the fuel slooshing around. I basically try not to let it get lower then 1/4 tank

It was only the one time i let my fuel get that low. I get the miss regardless of fuel level now. Only does it at idle after running for a few hours.

So i have an engine code now, DTC-36 (Injection pulse width error-response time long). The miss is getting worse now, backfiring through the exhaust and almost stalling. Noticable when idling at lights now too. I've reset the code and going to fill up and put 1/4 quart of atf in the tank.
Does this mean that my IP is failing?

A DTC 36 means that your PMD/FSD is fried and you should replace it with a new one incl. a cooler. Stalling is one of the noticable reasons for a fried PMD.
