I have had a strange thing happen over the past few day on the 1996 K1500 truck I have been driving. When I first take it out it will not shift out of first gear and the speedometer will not work. If I hold it around 1900 to 2000 RPM (while moving) the speedometer will start to jump a little then it sets steady and the truck will shift on into 2nd gear and everything acts normally for the rest of the day. I feel that something might not be making a connection as it should or maybe something need to be cleaned I'm just not sure where to look.
I appreciate any help you all can give. Thanks..

The first I would check the speed sensor on the tail shaft of the transfer case, if the connections are ok The sensor is probably bad. That truck has a electronic speedometer and the ECM looks at sensor to control the shift points also. You might have a check engine light on and have a code of P0501 Vehicle speed sensor(VSS) Hope this helps Have Fun!

Thanks sixnickel for the info! I don't have the service engine soon light coming on just the Anti Lock Brake Light and it only comes on when the speedometer acts up:confused:

The ABS looks at that sender also. So yes that light could come on also.

SixNickel, I just wanted to let you know that you were on the money about the speed sensor. I did a few test to make sure it wasn't a wire problem. Then I went down to the GM dealer and bought the sensor and put it on. I think GM must think that sensor is made of gold for what they want for it:eek: but it did fix the problem. Thanks so much for the advice!
