hi,gentleman(and ladies). newbie here.been aorund big diesels for a while and used to wrench on the old army diesels a while back.anyway,i have a 95 sierra witha 6.5 and was wondering if the water pump comes off by itself or does it come off as a one piece with the timing cover.my crank sensor went out and of course it broke while trying to change it out.the easy out trick didn't work so here it goes...PLEASE HELP!!!thx in advance.

Pump and cover are one unit until you get it off and get access to the bolts. I put my bolts down in a pattern so I can get them all back in the right spot. I swear there's about three thousand bolts. Maybe you should buy a front cover seal while you're in there.

thanks,GPD.i do appreciate it a lot.i did get the gasket kit from ssdiesel,so in goes a new seal, all gaskets and of course the sensor.i was reading about your cummings conversion and it was very interesting.anyway, thanks for the reply and the tip on keeping the bolts in a pattern.

You should think about putting Walts cooling upgrade while you have it apart.. Water pump, t-stat housing and fan you wont be sorry ...

Yes! At least get that high volume water pump. And if you can't afford the housing, I think he sells a high volume t-stat. But if you've got some money get all that stuff. Everyone who buys it says their temp never moved off 180* again! These 6.5's last alot longer if you keep them nice and cool.

well gentleman, here's another one for you and i am expecting the worst.when i was pulling my harmonic balancer off,i noticed a little too much play in the crank.not back and forth, but more like side to side.i am guessing my motor or crank for that matter is junk.any ideas?i am about ready to put a gas motor in this thing if it keeps up.my dream truck is turning into a nightmare...HELP!!!

...or the belt shive???? if it was running ok then your problem can't be that bad...6.5 has 2 "balancers"...outboard is held on with 4 bolts and mounted in rubber...when IT fails it is usualy diagnosed as a rod knock and people PANIC...inner is really the harmonic balancer...as long as the bolt and center of balancer is tight you don't have a problem...I noticed a vibration on beast and blamed my failing tranny and ignored it for @a month till I got tranny rebuilt...then I went looking found inner balancer spun loose on hub held in place by outer unit...replaced both...these are tough engines..keep the fuel and oil clean and the temps low as possible and they last forever...jd

I don't understand. You have play in the crankshaft? Unless all the bearings fell out of the mains, I'd say that was just impossible to feel with the human hand. Can you explain more?

here goes...when the crank sensor went, truck was running fine.when i started to take apart the harmonic balancer to get to the front cover,i took off the one that the belt goes onto and when it was time for the big bolt to come off,i put the socket on the bolt.when i went to turn the bolt, the crank felt like it had a little too much play in it,like when you turn it it wiggles.GPD,i would agree with you that i dont think the mains came off and i was wondering whether you or mr. truckdoc would happen to know about this.i haven't pull the cover yet(working from b4 sun-up to after sun down)however,i do plan on doing it on sat.i guess i will keep you gentleman posted.i do like my truck and you know what they say... IT TAKES BUCK$ TO PLAY WITH TRUCK$

Im not sure what kinda wiggles your referin to. There is nothing to keep your crank from spinning when you try and turn the bolt. Engine compresion is it. Of course it will take some cranking to build that. Unless you have your manual tranny in gear, that will hold engine when you try and turn bolt. You will have some play there, cause of wear in complete drivetrain.

I'm curious now! Keep us posted. The crank might spin, but it shouldn't "wiggle". If you can wiggle it by hand, think of what combustion can do...

i will keep you gentlemen posted as i work on it.i will also try to post pics of how much wiggle it has and a video of it as well.my tranny was in gear when i took the bolt off,and thats when i noticed the wiggle ,play or whatever.thank you gentlemen in advance for the help:o

well, got my timing cover off(what a pain) and upon closer inspection, found it to cracked, especially around the seal.when i lokked at the crank sensor,i noticed some wear, where the pick turns and the sensor gets the signal.here's the kicker...i decided to grab the crank by hand and yes,i can move it by hand.up and down.does anybody have an extra front timing cover(not the whole thing)they are willing to sell?trying to figure out why the crank has this play.i guess if nothing else,i'll drive it until it goes kabooommm!!!i'll post pics of the cracked timing cover soon.thanks for the help...

HOLY CRAP! If you can move crank up and down then the cracked timing cover is the least of your worries! You shouldnt be able to do that at all. You ever notice metal in the oil, or on the drain plug magnet when changing oil? Sounds like your missing some main bearings. kinda surprised it aint broke the crank, or started makin a loud banging noise yet.

well,i guess there's no turning back.i think i'll pull the engine as soon as i get my sbc powered s10 done(hopefully soon) and see what i find with the crank play.i'm guessing that if i rebuild it,might as well keep it for a while.looking at options as wether to rebuild mine or buy a good used one.we'll find out... oh yeah,245,500 on the clock.god only knows the abuse this engine had...

I had a noise where it sounded like something was going to fly out from under the hood, while idling.
I rented the pullers and when i bought the balancer, they ask if I wanted the complete unit. I thought it was a two pc unit. So I bought it and pulled balancer and "vibration damper" at one time. The damper has a rubber hub or ring all around it, that unit has 4 bolts and will come off withiut pulling the harmonic balancer. I, as most, learned the hard way. I was able to put my original balancer back on and the vibration damper was my weird noise problem. The balancer has a keyway to put back only one way, but the damper does not, can go on any way, just use the four excisting bolts.
Hope this helps
Rob

well,i finally got my motor pulled this last sunday.guess what i found?yep,a busted crank and more impressive is that the son of a gun still ran, until the crank sensor went out.luck being on my side(thank god)rods are good, pistons are good, heads, valves, lifters, etc. are all good.hell, even the main caps are within tolerances.the crank broke right before the #2 main cap,on the counterweight and before the journals after the #1 main.now to start counting my blessings and gat a new crank to put it together.

Thats great to not have destroyed the engine, shame about the crank breaking history of some of these engines.

yeah,i have been reading about broken cranks on some of these engines.well,we'll just have to make it better, right? after taking the motor apart,i looked it over and there were still the cross hatch pattern in the cylinder walls along with barely worn lifters, cam, cam bearings, etc.somebody somewhere along the line rebuilt part of the motor if not all of it and overlooked the crank.like i said before, still counting my blessings!!!:)

Your really lucky. Im still curiuos as how the crank broke, but yet still spun all the accessories , not to mention cylinders 1+2. Your are lucky for sure. Have fun with the rebuild.
