First thing check battery voltage if they are above 12.5 volts then check to see if posts are clean then just trial and error checking the start circuit..G

Thanks Garth..... these are all new terminals and I
coated them with battery protective spray to boot.
I will check the voltage tomorrow,

New starter? who built it, where ya get it from? Not all starters are equal. Hope ya got a good warranty with it. Check to see that the cap on the solenoid is ok, and all connections are tight. Dont overtighten or you will risk crakin the cap and thats no good. Check your grounds too.

You didn't put the spray on before connecting cables did you? I know a guy who did that and apparently it isn't conductive. I know what you're thinking and it wasn't me.... I swear.

Don't mean to highjack but is a 6.2 and the 6.5 starter the same?

Not the same on the vehicles I have. The 6.2 is a fat direct drive and the 6.5 is a thin one with a reduction gear.

I believe I did........ 9 months ago and it's been
working great until now. No dragging
The starter was brand new and not a rebuild. I will dig
up the receipt........

hey sundance this new starter you speak of come form a auto parts store( autozone, oreillys, aap, etc etc..). Reason i ask is i worked at one for 5 years and they brung out the "new" starters to their stores which is a good ideal but lets face it, it is the same company building it that is building their rebuilt ones. The reason i say this is the top of the line rebuilt has the same warranty as the new(limited lifetime warranty at all major parts stores) at the fraction of the cost 99% of the time. Most of your top of the line rebuilt units have all new internals anyways, so you're only paying for the new housing. But anyway...
The batteries would be your first place to check. just take them out and take them to somebody that can test them. all of the discount auto stores can do it. See to really check a battery it needs to be load tested. that way they can check the cca(cold cranking amps), thats what actually gets the work done from the battery. the voltage is easy to check but if the battery has lost some of its cca, it can't do the job you ask to. but it must be load tested!!
And if it is the batt, you need to make sure your alt is ok. A weak batt can kill an alt after a period of time and vis-versa.
if nothing else check the starter too. just take it to a parts store and they'll bench top test it and they can see how many amps it takes to operate it and if it is out of spec.

Don't want to insult you but you did not say if you tightened the battery connections. Just cause there new and were tight doesn't mean they won't loosen up. I have had it happen to me ( wife thats worse ) so I have a policy that with every service I check the torque on the battery connections and they do move. And the wife has bin happy!!!!

As long as the wife is happy Doug you cant ask for anything more..Mine wants a new Trail Blazer she says that will make her happy ...(I guess she is not going to be happy)....G

How is this done???
On the dually (work truck) it clearly clicks down
at the starter...
On the HD it turns over sweet but a no start, no
white smoke....... and can't get the frickin fuel shut
off solenoid out for fear of breaking it.

...gage when dually starter clicks at starter...ok, clicks as in bendix kicks in but does'nt spin,or solinoid clicks with no other performance...bendix kicks in no spin check for open winding or stuck brush...solinoid clicks only check for internal problem at solinoid...now no movement at amp gage when starter"clicks" that's a wiring/connection/bad batt problem...the spin over no start on HD is the symptom on switch...pull lower steering trim cover and find all ign. switch connections...has 2 power terminals 1 runs engine b runs everything else...jumper hots together if one is loose...terminals should NOT be loose{no wiggle}..hope this helps...jd
