I have a 1993 chevy with a 4l80e, i was driving it and something got hot and smelt like it was burning, ive checked all my fuses, all are good, ive checked my computer, doesnt seem to be fried, Ive checked tranny fluid, still good, not black at all, i was driving it that is what happened, then afterward, i relized the transmission was in safe mode and I only had second gear, and the check engine light was on and now is off, any ideas? Thanks.

you check the wiring to the tranny? sounds like a shift solenoid problem but i could be wrong. Only 2nd and reverse right? There was another guy had a similar problem on here, I don't know if he ever got it fixed or not though.
have you read the code yet?

yeah only 2nd and reverse...ive checked all of the wiring, nothing seems to be burnt or anything, i heard that there was three or four things in the bottom of the tranny that get plugged up, is that true? could that be it? and how do i read codes again? can I read codes with no engine light on?

Open a paper clip and use it to connect the top right 2 connectors in the diagnostic plug by the steering column. Turn the key to "on" and count the SES light flashes, .... pause... longer pause ... pause... will do this three times for each code of 2 digits. turn the switch off and remove the clip, do not start the engine with the clip installed. With the clip in place and switch on, press brake and accelerator down for 15 seconds and the codes are erased, although they keep showing until the ignition is switched off.

Ya there is two shift solenoids in the tranny. Very easy to change out and only about $35 a piece at the parts store. just drop the tranny pan and "you're there dude". But it is really simply to fix but read the codes first. Even with the light off it would have stored any codes that it picked up when you said the light did come on. read it and go from there

Did the paperclip and it didn't work, the engine light never showed up, any ideas now?

...check the relay wiing that powers the transmission...also the engine speed sensor wiring...a component part of oil pump drive

I did, none seem to be burnt, would the sensors in the tranny pan cause this to happen? And make the check engine light go off

Did you mean that when you tried to read the codes the light did not come on at all or did you mean it just read a code 12( i can't really remember if that is the correct code or not for it to show it is working.) I could be wrong but i believe on your truck it is supposed to flash a code 12 before and after any and all codes shown(i know the gas trucks and cars had this feature). I'm not 100% sure on that. Grancito may know. If if is supposed to and it didn't either the light is out or you are tripping the wrong terminals or ecm is fried.

Seems that 12 only appears if there are no codes stored. Does the ses light come on when you first switch the ignition on? That is the test that the bulbs are OK.

...I meant to check the wiring for relay AND relay...no power or ground to relay means no power to tranny computor...mechanical part of tranny still works{1 forward and 1 reverse} but no electronic shifts...it's possible you burnt a connection at a ground connection...it won't show as a melted wire, mayonly be a black spot at a ring connector...hope this helps...jd

well since the code twelve is for no codes stored, if he didn't even get that then something is wrong. You should have at least got a code 12.

Yes, it did work right before this little thing happened, ever since it never flashed, and nothing flashed when I linked to top right two terminals.

I am going to get a computer out of 93 and put it into mine and see if that is what it is, if not, where is the power wire and ground wires to the transmission? Thank You.

So are started checking where I have power and where I don't, I don't have any power going to my ECM or tps, I do have power to my fuse box, don't have power to transmission either, where does the power originate from? I can't figure out where it starts at, all this help from you guys is really appreciated and it helps a lot. So thank you all.

Did you check the fuses?

Yes, they are all good, could I just run a power wire to the red wire going into the ecm? and then it would all have power correct?

grancito

Check for power at the ECM fuse. Make sure you connect to the correct wire if you are going to run another wire to the ECM.

Found the problem, there was a wire that had burnt in half, but I have codes 12 and 22, what do these mean?

grancito

12 indicates code reading mode, 22 is accelerator pedal circuit 1 low. In your case the position sensor is on the injector pump and controls transmission shift points. 12 is not displayed on 94, 95 models when there is a trouble code.
