Back in 1982/3 DDA did help Chevrolet with the design of the 6.2. In 1984 all R&D was transferred to Chevrolet-Pontiac-Canada Group. It remained there untill the formation of the GM Engine Division untill 1990 then it was absorbed into GM Powertrain in 1991. So with that history story what do you think? Is it or is it not a DDA? You might be pushing it calling it a DDA.

I call mine a Detroit. from what i have heard with GM's attempt at a diesel with the old 350 the 6.5 has alot more Detroit influence then GM influence.

May I correct myself. I missed a line in my history book, for a while in 1983 DDA did have full control of the 6.2 project. Then it was transfered to Chevrolet- Pontiac-Canada Group later on in 1984. I guess the old fart that I am a Detroit Diesel has to be a 2 stroke. The 60 Series is Rodger Penski's doing.

6-71! Now there was a diesel engine. I loved the 3-71 in my Gamma-goat that I drove in the Army. Could wrap that puppy out to 70mph (the BN mechanics took the govenor off the engine when we asked them just how slowly did they want to be rushed to the hospital in our Gamma-goat Ambulance) on the hiway, engine sat two feet behind our head, HAD to wear hearing protection with that screamer!

Talk about noise the old Fireboat #1 for Vancouver BC (now in San Francisco ) if my memory serves me correctly it had 2 16 V-71's for drive power and aux pumps then it had 3 12V-71's for pumps a 6-71 for generator and a 3-71 for a compressor now that was a noisy engine room

I know nothing other then that Detroit was involved in designing the engine and it makes it more of a Detroit then anything else. As for whether its a GM engine or not, I think GM tried the 5.7, it failed, so they outsourced diesel engines ever since, The Dmax is made by isuzu isn't it?
Detroit wasn't just 2 strokes my FD's Seagrave has a detroit in it. The engine is just about the only thing that works right on it.
My pet name for my rig is the Detroit CJ.

Another thought from the old fart! If you drop a big ol' blower in the valley of that 6.5 and get twice the number of power strokes at at the same RPM then I might call it a Detroit Diesel. If you get a turbo charger to feed that super charger then I would call it a Silver Series Detroit

If you really want it to look like a DD don't forget to add those drip tubes that hang down by the oil pan!

One thing about a Detroit. If it's not leaking, It must be out of oil!!!!

LOL:D You all are so funny! I had an 8V71 that would drip so bad we had a bottle to catch the oil and it had to be dumped every 4 days. On the other side of things, I had a pair of 6v92s that would not drip a drop on the ground. All that said you've got to love the Detroit!

I don't have too many problems w/leaks and I don't think its out of oil. But how in the heck do you get those cooler lines to quit leaking. :confused: then:mad:

6.2L
The original 6.2 L (379 ci.) Diesel V8 was introduced in 1982 in the Chevrolet/GMC C/K trucks. It was produced through 1993. The 6.2L diesel hit the market as a high-MPG alternative to the V8 gas engine lineup at a time when power-on-tap wasn't necessarily needed and the market were more focused on the MPG it could achieve.
[edit] Applications
* 1982–1993 Chevrolet/GMC C/K
* Hummer H1
* GM version of the CUCV
[edit] Specifications
* Engine Code: LH6 and LL4
* Displacement: 6.2L / 379 ci.
* Bore x Stroke: 3.98 x 3.80 (in.)
* Block / Head: Cast iron / Cast iron
* Aspiration: Natural
* Valvetrain: OHV 2-V
* Compression: 21.5:1
* Injection: Indirect
* Horsepower / Torque (at start): 130 hp @ 3,600 rpm / 240 lb-ft @ 2,000 rpm
* Horsepower / Torque (at final): 143 hp @ 3,600 rpm / 257 lb-ft @ 2,000 rpm
* Max RPMs: 3,600
[edit] 6.5L
The 6.5 L (397 ci.) version was introduced in 1992 to replace the 6.2. It was designed from the start for turbocharging, and most 6.5s are equipped with a turbo. This engine was never meant to be a horsepower and torque competitor with Ford/International and Dodge/Cummins, but rather a simply designed workhorse engine that made credible power and achieved then-decent fuel economy. The Duramax 6600 replaced the 6.5 in passenger vehicles beginning in 2001, but the 6.5 remains in production for the AM General HMMWV.
The 6.5L is one of the most common diesel-swapped motors due to the relatively small size, and because it can fit into almost any bay where a V8 once was or where even a larger-sized V6 was.
[edit] Applications
* 1992 - 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe / GMC Yukon
* 1992 - 1999 Chevrolet Suburban / GMC Suburban
* 1992 - 1999 Chevrolet and GMC C/K
[edit] Specifications
* Engine Code: L56, L57 and L65
* Displacement: 6.5L / 397 ci.
* Bore x Stroke: 4.06 x 3.82 (in.)
* Block / Head: Cast iron / Cast iron
* Aspiration: Turbocharged (GM-8)
* Valvetrain: OHV 2-V
* Compression: 18.0/20.2:1
* Injection: Indirect
* Horsepower / Torque (at start): 190 hp @ 3,400 rpm / 380 lb-ft @ 1,700 rpm
* Horsepower / Torque (at final): 215 hp @ 3,200 rpm / 440 lb-ft @ 1,800 rpm
* Max RPMs: 3,400
I hope this answers your question on weather the 6.5 is a Detroit Engine or not!

General Motors introduced a line of Diesel V8 engines for their C/K pickup trucks in 1982. This engine family, designed by GM division Detroit Diesel, was produced through 2000, when it was replaced by the new Duramax line.
The General Motors light-truck 6.2 and 6.5 L Diesel engines were optional in all 1982 through 2000 Chevrolet and GMC C/K series pickup trucks, Suburbans, Blazer/Jimmy, Tahoe/Yukon, vans, and motor homes. The ready availability and low cost of these engines has made them popular for conversion projects and kit vehicles. These engines are often a popular choice for conversion in Land Rovers, Land Cruisers, and similar vehicles.

The Duramax was a derived from an Isuzu block and had Volvo style heads!! They never put an actual Isuzu engine in a Chevy pickup! All the Duramax's are built by Chevy!!
At least this is what my diesel mechanic at the Chevy dealer has told me!! How straight his story is... ??? ... He did go to a Chevy factory school on the Duramax's though!! Well my two cents!!
Happy 4th all!!
