When our trucks are out on the road they stand out a little bit. The tell tell signs of the 6.5 on the hood, the vented front bumper, the slightly larger exhaust, and the rattle and humm of the V8 diesel. On the occasion one ends up in the junk yard the engine, hood, and bumpers are usually the first parts to go. Is there a VIN # I need to watch for or some other distinguishing signs?

The eighth digit of the VIN is the engine code. A 6.5 is either an 'F' (heavy duty) or an 'S' (light duty). A 6.2 is either a 'C' or a 'J'.
Happy hunting.

Lots of junkyards have it in the computer. Even if the engine and stuff is gone, it will still come up as a diesel.

Is there any reason a standard front bumper can't be used on our trucks? The cord for the block heater sticks out of mine, but other than that...?

They're speed holes. :D

Really though, the holes are for ventilation through the radiator.
