What would cause a hard hot start condition on a mechanical pumped 6.5? Its gettin warm here agin I(in the 80's) and my truck is a pain in the @ss to start after its up to operatin temp. It ya let it set over a couple hours it will start right up. First start in morning it fires right up. Once warm, and you let set over 15 min or so and its a nightmare to start. I even swapped in batts that are less than a year old. No change. Glowplugs are on a manual switch and it dont matter wheather i run them 5, 10, 15 seconds. no change. long crank time and hard start. When i put the new ip on a couple years ago i just hand timed it. ran fine. Montha ago when we had first warm spell i bumped timming up a fuzz. I can move pump 1-2 degrees without forcing the lines to bend. I just bumped it up till it took a some force to hold it, let off and let lines put it where they wernt bein flexed. Man did that wake the truck up. Cold started better ( not that it had a cold start problem) and it really felt like it ran better. No real engine noise change. Cold start advance disconnected and ran thru a toggle switch in cab. egts came down about150* even when towing. Boost dropped a couple psi so i adjusted wastegate brought it back up to 10 under hard accel. truck still runs great, but the hard hot start has come back. Gettin annoyed with it and want to fix it so i dont burn up a starter. Any suggestions? Oh yea, lift pump is working (moves fuel thry bleeder and makes noise) Currently it is on a manual toggle in cab as im turnin pump on before crankin truck to pressure fuel system before startin, and thats not helpin either.
Another question. Id like to install a perminant fuel pressure gauge on my truck. every aftermarket gauge ive looked at says mount outside of vehicle. Wher do you guys that have a gauge mount yours, what gauge do you have? Sure would be nice to monitor fuel pressure all the time.
Thanks

When I get hard starts hot it is aways the starter brushes worn out. Easy place to T into the fuel is at the water drain tap above the themostat.

Starter is a little over a 16 months old. was a "new" starter. From auto zone. ( least if its junk its another "new " starter for free)
I know where to tap into fuel line. I am wondering where you perminantly mount a gauge so you can see it all the time, even when driving. and be "street legal" all the fuel pressure gauges i see say on there face "mount outside of vehicle."

Mount the gauge in the hood, or forget about legal and put it inside, goverment makes too many regulations. Slow hot start, one occaision it was lack of lubrication in the starter bearings.

Check something next time it hard starts warm. Pour a bottle of water over the injection pump and retry. I don't know if is the same problem I've dealt with so many times, but it is worth a shot.
As for the fuel pressure, I used an automotive boost gauge (20in vac - 20psi). That way I could see the vacuum it was pulling when the lift pump quit working. Only problem I had was the fuel ate the first T fitting I used at the T valve, second one has held up for 1.5 years now.
Good luck.

...the pete or kw deal..never mind go to navistar dealer or local version of fleetpride...in seventies and up into early ninties large cars had a fluid filled fuel pressure gage in dash cluster..still available just have to look....when you bought your"new"pump did it have old style delivery head or the new one...air gap between head and valve..ok headspace..would cause loooow delivery pressure on hot start...fought this on beast till pump finally died at @250k...buddy at local pump shop quoted new pump at @800$ or @1100$...I asked what the *&%$!...he told me about the difference...when I went in to see which head was on my pump,he showed me the difference...I'm in central texas...last year we had 22 100+ days in a row...no hot start problems since pump change...jd...oh yeah you know I had to spend the 1100 on mine...figures..

That's what I was getting at with the bottle of water. If it cures it then the pump needs to be updated, because it is using old style parts or just wasn't a very high quality build.

I got my pump from our site sponsor, SSdiesel. Yes i have heard of the head differences and trouble. was realy hopin that wasnt the problem. I will try the water trick tho.
As far as the fuel pressure gauge, autometer gauges, and a few other makes have an isolater that your supposed to put inline between fuel and gauge to keep fuel away from gauge. so it should keep fuel outta cab anyways. Dont wanna mount it external in my cowl hood becasue of water/weather issues. Just curious how others have done it. thanks for the imput so far guys.

Well as i was afriad my pump is junk. Drove it 20 miles to get some parts. Wouldnt start. tried 3 times, little smoke came outta exhaust but no life. Slowly poured a gallon of water over top of ip, mainly the delivery head area, and it fired right up as if nothing was wrong. Guess its timke to contact walt. whenit rains, it pours. goodbye upgrades.

I have been PMing someone with a similar problem the last few days, but a DS4 IP, it was the fuel shut off solenoid that responded to ice to make it work.

...on mechanical pump is inside top of pump housing...on electronic pumps it screws into front/top of pump.....jd

Thanks for that truckdoc. I tried meltin 6 ice cubes directly on top of pump, right above the wire terminals that go thru the pump housing to the shutoff solenoid, and no luck starting. Dumped water over the delivery head again, and walla instant startup. Truck is getting another pump. Walt is workin with me on the situation.

The couple replacement lift pumps i found (and currently have one on my truck) have a pressure regulator in them so no to go over a certain psi. The current pump on my truck is "a direct relacement" but in the installation directions it said varriable pressure from 7-10 psi. I wanna monitor fuel pressure to my ip, just to make sure that its gettin proper fuel supply all the time.
I found an aftermarket company with an analog pressure gauge for $55. Cheapest I could find to mount inside cab. Autometer was $150 +. And yes most maufatures do make a gauge, better than half of them are supposed to be mounted outside of cab. the analog ones are just plain expensive.

interesting. im guessin he must have a truck thats all slicked up inside. All the gauges and shiny chrome you can think of. I myself have been in few different trucks and have never seen a fuel pressure gauge in the cab of a truck. I have seen alot of digital dashes with fuel monitors, level, mpg, gpm, avg economy, and so forth. What kinda pressure that gauge read, and for what purpose?
