I have a '92 6.5TD with 141k on the clock. Last month I changed the water pump, fixed a radiator leak and replaced the temp gauge sending unit. When I fired up to check for leaks, the truck was idling between 1200-1500 rpms. The more I worked the throttle, the higher it got. I noticed a soleniod with a rod through it on top of the linkage. The rod appeared to be sticking so I unplugged the connector and the idle dropped to 800. I foolishly thought this solenoid was for the cruise control and was wrong. I am now getting a hot start issue. Truck fires up fine when cold and runs great(even better than before the waterpump fix). If I drive the truck up to operating temp then shut it down for less than an hour it will barely fire up. When I put it in gear or work the throttle, it just dies. Today I had to put a battery charger on it to get it started.

Any ideas as to what the problem could possibly be? Previous owner put a new lift pump in from Autozone. I put a new starter and glow plug controller last year. Other than an air filter and replacement parts, truck is stock.

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Not sure, but it sounds like two problems. The high idle was probably cold start which you unplugged and dropped the idle down to normal. Next time the engine is warm and won't start, dump a cup of water on the injection pump and try to start it again. If that fixes it, you need a new injection pump.

Yup, i slowly poured 2-3 qts of cool water over the output end of pump when it wouldnt start and then it fired right up. Thats a sure sign of delivery head warpage on the ip. only cure is a new pump. How old are your batts? 1 bad batt and/or bad ground will aslo cause hard hot start issues., or at least in did in the past on my truck.

And yes, as GPD stated that solenoid you unplugged is the hi idle solenoid for cold starting.

Thanks guys for the responses. I was afraid that this was going to be an expensive problem.
Next question-IF it is a head warping problem on the IP, will the truck run and just have hot start issues or will it eventually fail and leave me stranded?

JD-My batts are less than 2 years old. I bought them both new at the same time when I first had a hot start issue. Last year I replaced the starter and glow plug controller and that seemed to cure the problem until now.

Walt told me to carry water with me to keep startin my truck till i could replace pump. How long will it last? Probly a while, but the extened cranking times will quickly take a toll on your starter, and batts. The sooner you swap the better i'd say. If that is your problem. Walt is the cheapest manufature of these pumps. i checked around and ssdiesel is by far the cheapest place to geta pump. Comes with the newest design fuel delivery head on pump, and 1 yr warranty. the few places i checked with were $200-$500 more than ssdiesels price, for new head and rebuild and 1 yr warranty.

...with the old hot start issue @ 2 years before pump died going down the road...and then it was a broken governor spring at @220k miles on factory pump on beast...

Thanks again guys. I am going to drive it around tomorrow and see what I find out. I have a big race in August that I have to pull the trailor and my S10 drag truck to. It is a 3.5hr pull and I am finacially elbow deep in building this S10 so hopefully I can hold out until September to get a new pump and the mods I was planning to do to the dually.
