I was wondering if anyone has an ideal what is wrong with my truck? Its a 93 chevy 6.5 turbo and it has no power and pours black smoke out the exhaust. I replaced the turbo but that didnt change any thing.

Make sure your vacuum pump is working. The turbo is controlled by a solenoid on the passenger valve cover and works off of vacuum. If the solenoid, vac pump or vac cannister on the side of the turbo is shot, you won't make any boost.

Check all the things that hraney said also the rod on the waste gate should be pulled in to the vacuum chamber at idle. You should have 15" of vacuum at the waste gate at idle 20" at the pump. Does the engine have a EGR valve? If it does the intake manifold could be plugged with soot. What is the boost pressure? ( oh ya bet you don't have a boost guage time to get one ) Chech the vacuum hoses and lines for cracks and leaks. Vacuum holds the waste gate closed no vacuum = no boost . No boost = No power and a lot of smoke! Hope this helps Good Luck

Whoa, guys. K of C said he has a 93, that's not a computer controlled model!! No vacuum pump or solenoid. So, did you reuse the wastegate actuator off your old turbo? If so, it is probably bad, and there could have possibly been nothing wrong with your old turbo itself (unless it did have mechanical damage to the turbo). If your new turbo came with a wastegate actuator, is it properly set? Turn the adjusting nut in two full turns to compress the spring some more. Test drive the truck, pushing the accel. pedal down at a moderate rate. Does it smoke later than before? Does it seem to have more power than before? Then you're on the right track, get a pressure gauge to set the actuator correctly. No more than 15psi at WOT.
No change, then you have a pressure leak somewhere else in the intake system. Check the turbo to upper intake connecting hose for splits or holes, and the hose clamps are tight. Check the upper intake to plenum for leaks around the gasket. Check the EGR (if equiped) for leaks around its gasket. Lastly, check for leaks between the plenum runners to the heads. Leaking along the bottom of the ports is not uncommon. A way to check is to spray some soapy water along the intake gaskets. Do a brief "power brake" to bring the turbo on boost, shut down, and look for bubbly or foam along the intake or at the bottom edge. These are the only places you could be leaking intake pressure from.
The black smoke is a sign of over fueling, due to no/low boost.
Hope this helps.

I answered that way just to see if Husker 6.5 was awake! and on the ball. Ya he was. Honestly, I missed the part about a 93 something. But if everything checks out you still might have a soot problem if it is a EGR engine. Something to keep in the back of your mind,Keep us posted Good Luck

One of those sleepless nights last night, kinda suprised myself that I caught that, too. Logged off at 2:45 this morning, drove home from my girlfriends house where I access on-line, got home, was up at 5:30 and at work at 7:30.
Sorta reminds me of finals week in College 25 years ago, or Field Exercises in the Army. Anyone game for converting a 6.5 from IDI to a DI?
