I've read the other threads on oil leaks and found out yesterday I have one. It seems to be coming from an area above my oil filter from a set of steel lines. It drips down on the exhaust. Are these the infamous $200 lines they talk about? Is this any easy fix with a new set or am I looking at an all day affair? I do almost of my own work and buy any special tools I need for the job at hand. As I am a scoutmaster I would like to be prepared. Thanks folks for any help. Dan

As a former Boy Scout, and an ASM for my oldest son's Troop the definitive answer is . . .YES! I do most of my wrenching myself, and after tearing my motor down to a short block in the truck, I am currently starting a heads up rebuild of my motor. That said, replacing those lines is a real PIA, even more so if you can't stand under there to work on it as some of the access is a real bear lying on your back. So I opted to bite the wallet and have my mechanic do it. He's done them before, and it was every bit of the three hours flat rate for him to change them out. Your call.

Major PITA to change those out. It took me and a buddy a solid 1/2 day to get it done (laying on our backs or sitting on 5 gallon buckets). That was on my old 95 C2500. I can't imagine doing it on my 97 K3500 with all the skid plates in the way.

Hope we're not scaring you, but sometimes things are better left to the pro's with the proper equipment. Boy, do I often wish I had a lift at my house! Especially four weeks ago when I had to put a new starter on my van and was laying on a creeper in my driveway after work and it was -5*F and blowing 15 mph.

Is the part expensive and does anyone have a good picture of what is up there? I also believe that someone posted they flared theirs and fixed it that way.

It's a two-part deal, there are fittings that screw into the block which the oil lines attach into. It's almost always that oil line to fitting seal that leaks. You really can't just replace the one without replacing the other, it will most likely still leak and you will have wasted a lot of time and effort. Replace both lines and fittings and forget about them for another 150,000 miles. The oil line to radiator is dificult to reach lying under the truck, the block fittings are even worse to access. That's why I let my mechanic do it up on a lift, instead of doing them myself. The pair of lines and fittings are about $200.
