Hi there guys, my 4L80E is acting up and i found a used 4L80E with 80K miles locally for $400. It was behind a 454, torque converter aside is the tranny the same? It would be a lot cheaper to grab this one instead of $1200 for a rebuild. Thanks for the help.

My guess is they would be the same except for the torque converter. The PCM controls the shift points. The bone yards should have books to let you know for sure.

Thankx, that's what i was thinking too. The parts manuals list the electronics & stuff for a 4L80E, but don't seperate them for a 6.5 except for the converter and computer chip.

Hi, I'm new here. I just became the owner of a 95 Chevy 1 ton with a 6.5 turbo diesel. My first diesel. I'm curious you guys say the torque converter is different from gas to diesel. What would be different? Different stall speed? No lockup? Doesn't bolt to the flywheel? Thanx Billy

Bowtie billy,
Yes... Different stall speed. Usually the diesel converter has a lower stall speed to take advantage of the low end torque.
I remeber Dad and swapped out an old 5.7 diesel for the Olds gas in a 78 chevy 1/2 ton. We left the diesel converter in it. Between that and the 2.76 rear end, the truck cruised 65 at about 1750RPM. First time I'd ever seen an engine stall on an automatic tranny!
