While working on my 6.5L I noticed thers a tapping sound coming off the front of the engine were the vac pump is located. I noticed on the vac pump there is a piece lose on it on the bootom that looks like a plug. On the pics on ssdiesel site of the vac pump that piece should be all the way flush with the bottom of the vac pump. On my vac pump the piece is pretty much almost to the point of falling off. I can actually stick my flat head screwd driver in the gap. Has this ever happened to a vac pump before.

That piece is the exhaust valve, there are 2 types, one protrudes, the other is flush. The protruding one looks like a mushroom, the other looks like part of a kitchen sink plug.

The piece on mine is not only protruding; but its bent to the side as if its going to fall off.

Tap it back in with a hammer.

...turbo work o.k....cause that's all the pump runs...have you been losing power gradually?...this could be the cause...unplug the line from turbo control on left v.c. with engine running should have vacumn all the time...fairly strong vacumn...

Replaced the pump and truck runs great. no black smoke period. even on hard accelerations. When i took the old pump off there were metal pieces loose in it. turbo is really loud now. Before i could not hear it. It was very easy to replace. should have been done it a long time ago.
