I finally got my 6.5 back on the road, it seems to run good but now I have the codes 35 & 36. Does anyone know what to do about this? Also, I put a new computer in it, now the cruise control doesn't work. I checked the fuse, its good. Any ideas? Thanks.

Code 35 & 36 = PMD / FSD failure
Let the original one at the pump, get a new with a cooler and relocate it.
The Pump Mounted Driver or also known as Fuel Solenoid Driver is prone to failure in the original mount at the IP. This is the part that goes bad the most time on 6.5 diesels with electronic IP.

You may be right. but I hope not. I just put a new pump on it and it came with a new PMD and I relocated it right away, also, I have a used PMD and I changed to it, same 2 codes. What else could it be?

I also found out that when under acceleration, the SES light comes on, let off, it goes out. When the SES light is on, cruise control won't work, when off, it works fine.??????????

Hey 6point5 How do you have the PMD/FSD mounted? Also what did you use for a PROM (chip) in the new ECM?

I had a FDS mount already on the truck when the pump went bad. I got a new pump with a new PMD and immediately mounted it on the FDS mount. The first time the truck ran (last week) I got these codes (and others that I have resolved). Today, I put my old PMD on the heatsync and immediately got the same 2 codes. My old PMD worked just fine when I changed the pump, so I think it is good and when I got the same 2 codes from 2 PMD's, It makes me doubt that they are bad but I realize they could be. I ordered a new computer and a new prom for my truck by VIN# from GM. I still have the old prom and a performance prom but I haven't tried them yet, I had to give my old cuputer up for a core.

Also want to mention, it starts great, no smoke and is really running good. When the SES comes on, it uncouples the cruise control. Also the new PMD has a #6 in it, the old one has a #9 in it.

1st Pop the original PROM back in just for grins and giggles see what happens.
2nd Run a ground jumper from the ground wire on the Heat-Sync to one of the torx head screws on the top of the pump where it was originally grounded. I have had problems that the ground wire has fixed. The wire is grounded to the Heat-Sync but the Heat-Sync doesn't find a good ground on the intake.
Also this is important! Down the road keep checking the torque on the screws that hold the FSD to the to the Heat-Sync they DO loosen up!! I learned the hard way $$$

I'll do it! I'll let you know tomorrow. Meanwhile, be thinking about what else it could be. Can the pulse width be set with a Tech or is that preset? I don't have a Tech and the guy who does is hard to get up with, plus he has the right tool but he's not very knowledgeable. He works on gas burners.

I tried 3 different proms, I got the 35 & 36 code everytime. It must be the PMD unless the injection pulse width can be set with the tech tool. It still runs good with all proms and there is a definite difference in the power chip vs. the other two. More boost and the turbo is more audible. I also ran a ground strap to the heatsync.

Injection pulse is preset and can't be set with a tech tool. Normally you get code 35 OR 36, but never heared/seen both at the same time ( Code 35 -Response Time Short and Code 36 - Response Time Long -> at the same time ??? ). The codes must have another reason. I think now it can't be the PMD because you told, that you tried 2 different PMD's and got the same two codes. Did you clear the codes after changing to another PMD ? Have you looked at the pins in the conector of the cable ? Possible one pin bend ?

Yes, I got them both at the same time and I have cleared them several times. I'll check the pins. Thanks.

After a few days of driving around, I'm really happy with the way it runs but I still get codes. I've been driving I all day and then checking the codes and clearing them. I usually always get a 35 or 36 code and sometimes both. I've also gotten a 15 code several times so I bought a new coolant sensor but haven't put it in yet. I also got a 78 code, but only once. The worst thing about the codes is that the cruise will not work when the SES light is on. The light goes off (most of the time its off) and cruise works good. Other than that, runs good, starts good, more power, no smoke and I'm in the process of checking the fuel mileage. Also, of the 3 PROMs I have, I decided to run the 40HP chip with a #9 resistor. Does anyone have any opinions????

I am new to this page, I have a 94 K3500 with the 6.5 and 4L80E. I have the same problem you have with the SES codes of 35 and 36 at the same time. I have added the ground wire back to the pump from the FDS cooler and PDM. The truck runs great but I still have the codes, What did you find out about yours? I sure would appricate any help you could provide with this problem.
Thanks,

It seems to be pointing to the PMD but before I replace it, I am going to try and eliminate all other codes. I have a new coolant sensor but haven't put it in yet. I drove it for 30 miles yesterday before the SES light came on. I does seem to lite the SES after it is warmed up, not cold. I'm thinking that the heat is causing the PMD to do some quick, occasional and goofy things. Its got to get worse before I can make it better.

today, I finished the cooling system update, a new coolant sensor, flushed the system and went back to green plus NAPA Kool. Finally, this afternoon, I took a little stroll on back roads for about 30 miles. I got everything up to temps and the ole' gal was purrin'. (up over 100 a couple of times) I never got an SES light and the performance was spectacular. What a reward for 5 months of hell...... It may blow up tomorrow but what a day today!!!!

I must have something else going on then. When I start my truck the EMC will light the SES within about 10 seconds. I wiped the computer today and it set all day before I tried to start the truck and within 10 seconds of starting the SES came on.
I will try replacing the coolant tempature sensor, maby I will get luckey!

I changed the coolant temp sensor and when the engine was idling, I started moving some wires around and heard a slight difference in RPMs at certain times. I took the temp sensor connector off and discovered that it was not making contact unless there was a little "strain" on the assembly. Using a small pic, I readjusted the contact surfaces in the connector and when I plugged it back in, the idle dropped and moving the wires now doesn't cause any RPM change. Since then, I have driven over 100 miles and have not had anymore codes. So, it appears that 35 & 36 codes do not necessarily mean you need a new PMD. I'm still holding my breath..........

Hey 6point5,
Was the I.P. that you replaced brand new O.E.M., or was it a reman. Also, where did you get it from? Code 35 on my Dually didnt go away untill I replaced my I.P. (After 2 new modules didnt fix it). Why replace an I.P. for just an error code you ask. Well, after a while, my code 35 that I had for a while started to be accompanied by erratic stalling.

Install the coolant sensor that should solve the problem

The IP was new and it came with a new PMD but I'm running on my old PMD because its mounted on the heatsync and it has a #9 resistor in it. I'd have to do a lot more research and experimenting before I changed the IP for a 35 code. Usually a 35 indicates the PMD but like in my case, other things can cause false alarms. In my case it was the coolant temp sensor.

im getting the code 35 again, my pmd is on a heatsync too. No driveability issues at the moment. It only happens right when i start it up and if its chilly out...

Hey Jon, Easy fix don't start it on chilly days!!! All kidding aside. Check out Walt's Part # SSD-3327 Optical sensor filter harness. I have not had any experience with this problem. My son's 94 Burb which we bought in Dec has one on it. I do know that alternators sometimes leak out some AC voltage( noise interference) and can drive the ECM and all it's Friends crazy!!!

Okay........my truck was doing the same exact thing and I just found the problem today.........Thank God!!!The vacuum supply line that is on the pump has a reducer to fit the smaller line that runs to the controller and it was restricting the vacuum running to the boost controller.I cleared the restriction and boom.......the 35 and 35 codes are gone and the truck makes the boost that we all love to hear.Have you hooked up a vacuum gauge to to vacuum pump to see if you are getting proper vacuum?
