Stuck in first gear.

1994 GMC 2500 HD. Ran perfect yesterday, will not shift out of first today. Transmission fluid looks fine. I'm open to any suggestions.

More details please. Miles on trans, SES light, any problems before, like slipping trans, slow to go into gear?

160,000 miles. No slow gear engagement or slipping, however the service engine soon light comes on when the engine is not fully warmed up, but goes off upon deceleration, and stays off when warmed up.

Use a paper clip and read the codes, it will most likely tell you what the problem is.

It turns out I had a badly burned out hub and bearing set on my trailer. I don't know how I did'nt hear it, (or smell it). Anyway; my truck shifts as good as new, and we're back in business!
