After getting off the highway yesterday, my 6.5 has a new rattle noise that appears to be coming from the front of the engine/belt area, now I know these are known for balancer failures but I want to be certain before i order the parts.
So far I removed the belt and the noise goes away, but it really don't pinpoint the cause, so if anyone has had a balancer/pully failure could you explain how you determined which part failed.
Thanks for any help you can offer :D

I had a simular noise in my engine a couple of years ago. It turned out to be the vaccum pump. The guy that found the problem, took a wooden dowel long enough to reach the pump. He placed it on the pump housing and put the other end up to his ear. (be careful of the belt and fan!) You could hear the clicking. I replaced the pump and all was fine.

If it is the pump, do your self a favor and put in a manual actuator
I've replaced my pump 3 times in the past 3 years at $ 120 per time

Engine off. Remove the tension from the serpentine belt. Grab the pulley and try to rotate it, move it in and out, and wiggle it back and forth. Any play, slop, looseness is unacceptable, replace your balancer. They do "just fail", mine went out one day driving down the highway, just started rattling when I came to an idle at the bottom on the off-ramp.

Thanks Husker, I'm almost sure it's the balancer because I've replaced many vacuum pumps on the Powerstrokes and none of them sound anything like this when they failed ...... :(

Well the weather finally cleared enough for me to actually check things out and indeed the pulley does move about a half an inch so one is on it's way but I also noticed the vacuum pump is a bit on the noisey side as well so I may have had both going bad for some time and not noticed it till now :(

Replaced the pulley and you could definately see the stress tears in the rubber and marks from it hittng on the bolts, most of the rattle is gone but like I said in a prior post I will be needing a vacuum pump very shortly.
So thanks for the input guys :D
