On my trip to the beach last weekend my engine temps got too close to 200* for comfort over some long hills. I was looking at the fan upgrade kit and had a question.

It it possible to remove the engine driven fan and clutch and replace it with 2 electric fans? Will the electric fans provide better cooling than 1 booster fan and the engine fan?

What about the duramax fan upgrade? Will that do the trick instead of the electric booster fans?

All of this along with the rest of the cooling upgrades...of course!

Thanks for your thoughts

Why somthing change ? 200° F or 93°C is absolutly in "the green area". Mine is a Canada model with celsius gauge in and stays between 85°C and 95°C. So don't know why to worry about. For me, i would see no reason to change anything.

For daily city/highway driving what should the temp. be at? I just want to check what mine is!

In every car or truck i've ever owend or just driven the normal coolant temp was around 90°C / 195°F. This is the normal temp for a warmed/warm engine. For example, the thermostat on a VW Golf open at 92°C and standard for the 6.5 is a 195°F. If you live in a "hot" area like Florida or similar it could be better to change to a thermostat that open earlier such as 180°F. If you live in a colder zone it could be possible that you don't get enought heat in th cab with this or a lower temp thermostat. If your gauge shows while normal driving between 180°F and 200°F or 85°C and 95° it should be total okay. Have a look on it if you are towing. If than the temp goes up, you should think about some upgrades (waterpump, 180°F thermostat, fan and so on).

i thought i read on walts site that "no diesel should run over 200*F for long"... Is that not the case?

So when warmed up the needle should be at the big dash between 160 and 210 right?

Mine runs about 195 all the time after getting up to temp. ( in between big dash and 210 if the picture in my head is accurate)If I really crowd it loaded it creeps up towards 200 but has never gone over. I remember reading somewhere years ago that adiesel doesn't burn effeciently until about 175. If you are going over 200 regularly I would start looking at doing some maintenance on what you have and upgrading only if replacement parts are required.

The first thing I would do with that 95 you have is put Walt's cooling system upgrade on. Circulation is the big thing with these engines. These trucks have big radiators on them but you need the duel t/stats and 130GPM coolant pumps to take full advantage of them. Also check to see that all the fins of the coolers, AC condensor, and radiator are clean or bugs and junk.

How accurate are the OEM Guages in the truck?
