View Full Version : HO injectors and heat?

Hi folks,

I'm a newbee to the forum but not new to 6.5's. I have a 96 motorhome with a 6.5 pusher and have had my trials and tribulations with this engine for more than a decade. The big issue has been lack of power because the motorhome weights so much. Oh, I've added free flow mufflers, bigger exhaust, power chips, air filters, propane and higher stall speed torque convertors but nothing has really given me the performance I need. Anytime I hit a hill on the freeways, speed drops to less than the speed limit and that really pi$$ses me off. I use to not be in a hurry to get where I'm going, but a change of careers gives me little time off, so I have to maximize my few days off. So... I want to give my engine more power and speed and am considering the HO marine injectors and the #9 resistor. I would like to know if they add extra heat to the engine. I have never had a overheating problem with my motorhome, ever. I do not have the HO water pump or cooling upgrade. Never needed it. My engine never overheats because my motorhome has a heavy duty hydraulic clutch fan that turns on whenever temps reach 210 and cools it to 190 within seconds. From what I know, the cooling fan setup is what the military hummers use, except 12v instead of 24v. I want to get the injectors for the added horsepower but if they are going to add too much heat, I may reconsider. I do have a EGT gauge. Any help would be appreciated. I sent a question to the owners of this site, but they referred me to this forum.

Thanks,
Duke

duke,

Just added the marine injectors and #9 resistor on my 95 sierra and i have not noticed any increase in heat. I did notice more power though!

Hello

If you want to open up some real power, do two things. Add an intercooler. Either an air to air or liquid to air one. As noted in another thread here, the IC can drop intake temps up to 300 degrees. And a cooler intake makes more power and cools EGT's to boot! You can then saftly turn up the boost pressure to around 10 - 12 or so. Another things on the fairly cheap is water/methanol injection. It too cools intake temp (water) and adds more fuel (methanol). And if you want to drop around a grand, go with 18:1 pistons. You should see around 300 HP with all this stuff :)

I've looked deeply into the intercoolers. My engine is rear mounted, facing backwards and the clutch fan pulls air from the hot engine compartment thru a large oil cooler, thru a large tranny cooler then thru a large radiator before it exits out the rear. No cool ram air is involved in this process at all so the exit air is very hot, so hot in the summer I can't unhook the trailer hitch without burning myself. Plus, If there were room to mount it (which there isn't) the temp drop of a air/air IC would not be as significant a say a pickup truck which gets ram air. True it would still drop intake air and be less than stock, but I'm not sure if Id get the bang for the bucks. As for water/air cooler, I came very close to getting a Spearco. I had plenty of room to mount it in the engine compartment and probably could fit a small import radiator in a position that would get some airflow. Again, the front grill is 30' away so mounting the radiator up front is not a real option.

I've also looked at water injection, but not sure about the potential damage if something fails.

When this engine blows (again), the next replacement will be a beefed up marine engine for sure. The dealer replaced the last engine but it was under warranty so i had to get the Goodwrench. Labor rates on this motorhome are so high so pulling it to put pistons in would be outrageous. This is why I'm looking at the injectors, something I could do fairly easily. So, I just wanted to confirm that EGTs aren't raised by the upgrade. As it is, on all but flat roads, EGT's are in the yellow zone, I don't want to add to that.

Thanks for all your help, anyone have any other ideas?

Oh, I also forgot to ask, what about exceeding the rated input hp of the transmission. I have a Allison 542 and the net Hp rating is 235hp. So, given the fact I have a power chip already, if I add 30 more hp with injectors, if I exceed 235hp, am I at risk of destroying my transmission?

Marine injectors= more fuel = more HP = more heat BUT how much more heat? I guess the only way to find out is to put them in and find out. If the ECM is programed properly IT will sense the engine getting to hot and pull some fuel out to control the heat and protect it's self. As far as the transmission goes go to www.le-inc.com click in transmission fluid then 7500 Power Fluid that stuff is bullet proof and Allisons love that stuff!! Also I think you are a definite candidate for a inter cooler if you can fit one in some how.

I was thinking ( thats a dangerous thing for a man to do ) What about putting a intercooler up on the roof of the camper???? I could see myself doing somthing like that!!!

I've actually thought about putting the radiator for a air/water cooler on the roof.:) But i don't want my rig to look like something Jethro Clampett would own.

How about Mad Max? Go air to air, build a box around it to duct it and make it kook like a AC unit!!

I like the idea of the roof mounted air to air IC. The parts
are fairly inexpensive to put together and the benefit a big
one.

Here's a good thread on IC's and 1999GMC put together a
nice one for not much &&&. Scroll through and view his pics.
