Hey guys I think It's safe to say as of the end of Oct. 06 every thing we buy is ULSD. The Feds. called that one. I think ULSD is all the refineries are making now, even the off road diesel is ULSD. It might not say it on the pump but that's your buying. The fuel stations have to have there fuel tested and it can not be over 15 PPM sulfur. If it is they can not put the ULSD sticker on the pump. It takes a lot of loads to flush out the old low sulfur 500 PPM diesel. Just a few gallons of 500 PPM will get the ULSD up over 15 PPM. I know thats the rule in MA. One thing I have been told and have found is that the ULSD has a scrubbing action and goes in and cleans out your fuel tank and system, and it ends up in the filters. The trucks at work all had nasty fuel filters at first, but now they look cleaner than ever. Looking into the saddle tanks they look nice and shinny and clean not what they looked like before the with the 500 PPM.After a few filters changes I think you will be surprised how clean they will be. This ULSD stuff is here to stay we have to learn to live with it!!!!

most of the sediment is metal. I stuck a magnet in and just about everything stuck. Maybe from the tank?

I've heard that the ULSD has low lubricity. Should we be worried about wear in the fuel system or should we use an additive. Which additive do you recommend?

walt has one thats made by stanadyne. There are also other available at autoparts stores or walmart. Or you could switch to biodiesel:)

Marvel Mystery Oil is cheap ($10.00/gal) and does a good job.

I work for the oil company's and all they are making these days is ULSD. What they are doing is "acid cleaning" their storage tanks, and then flushing with water. The metal particles should have gotten caught by the oil transporter's filters, but may have came loose from your tank. ULSD in itself will "scour" any loose metal and clean so anything that's been slightly loose in your tank will get flushed through your lift pump and into the filter/water seperator. Might be a good idea to invest in a pre lift pump filter for the next year or so and save the lift pump from eating itself with these particles. ULSD does not have any IP lubrication, you'll have to use an additive for that.

How would we install a pre-lift pump filter?

The fuel companies add suplements to the fuel when they fill the tank trucks. I hauled 4 - 55 gal drums to Pittsburgh a while back, rush-rush, when they ran out. The drums came from Lubrizol. I talked a bit to the guys in Pittsburgh. They said it was mostly lube in the drums, with some other additives too.
I actually have a feeling that the ULSD is going to prove to be better than the old stuff. I have noticed dirty filters too, but lately they have been much cleaner than before ULSD.

Some trucks have the lift pump external to the tank, it's possible to install a filter between the tank and the lift pump. For the trucks that have the lift pump in the tank, your pretty much stuck with the "sock" filter before the pump.

Go to your local auto parts store and buy a clear (so you can see the crap in it ) fuel filter and install it in the fuel line just before the lift pump (the frame rail on driver's side approx under the front seat). Fairly easy to do.
