Tried 4L in my 97 K3500 today. 2H to 4H was fine, but going to and from the low side of the box I got a lot of gear clashing from the xfer case. I was stopped and had the truck in neutral (auto trans). I even tried it w/ and w/o my foot on the brake (like that should make a difference:rolleyes: ).
I think this may be the only time I have tried 4L except for when I test drove it before purchase. It worked fine then (last August).
Any ideas?
Oh, and once it was in 4L it worked fine, just a lot of gear clashing in between.

What works for me is to roll in (N) about 2-5 mph and shift with one smooth action from 2H thur N to 4L. This has work for me on about 6 GM 4wd with no clashing.

Good luck

If all attempts fail, nothing seems to work, go back and read the directions !! If you read your owners manual. Just like bsidallis said ( quote from the manual )rolling at about 3 MPH, auto trans in neutral or clutch released (manual trans ). Shift the transfer case lever in one continuous motion. Don't pause in neutral as you shift the transfer case into 4- wheel low or your gears could clash!!(end quote) Do the same thing going back up to high range. If you do get it stuck in neural with a lot of grinding don't put in park. You will get a different scary noise. Just shut off the engine put the transfer case in gear then start the engine and away you go. Have Fun!!
